In-situ observations

In-situ measurement is done by a device that is in physical contact with the object or phenomenon being studied. 

Remote sensing is collection of information about an object or event without being in physical contact with the object or event. Remote sensing is restricted to methods that record the electromagnetic radiation reflected or radiated from an object.

Conventional instruments

Manual/conventional instruments are still widely used in the meteorological services around the world. Take a look at a list at Jamaican Meteorological Service web site of some manual instruments that are widely used in the Caribbean.
