We live in Krishnanagar,the headquarter of
Nadia district.Krishnanagar is situated at 22�24' North & 88�31' East,with an average height of 46 feet above MSL.The Tropic of Cancer passes near the town.
Zamindar (landlord) of Nadia,Raja Rudra Roy,during his rule (1683-1694) shifted his capital from
Matiari to a village Reui & later named it Krishnanagar after the name of Lord Krishna.
It was the great grandson of Rudra Roy, Raja Krishnachandra Roy (1710 - 1782)during whose rule
Krishnanagar earned it's fame. The residence of the ruling family known as the
Rajbari is a place of tourist interest today.
The town is bound on the East by river Jalangi .The population of Krishnanagar is 1,46,036
as per census report 2001.The city constituted a municipality in 1864.
Krishnanagar is a road and rail junction.
Suburban train services connect Krishnanagar city to
Sealdah (Kolkata),about 100 Kms away. It is the major agricultural distribution centre for the district.
Ghurni , a suburb, is famous for coloured clay models
& sculpture.
A Roman Catholic Church,a horticultural research
station and jute nursery,the Government College ,
Collegiate School
and the Rabindra-bhavan are some of it's important
landmarks. A large fair known as the "Barodol-er mela"
is held annually at the Rajbari grounds.Krishnanagar is also famous for it's
Jagaddhatri pujas.
Those who have an appetite for sweet dishes,Krishnanagar has a lot to offer.The duo Sarpuria & Sarbhaja are the most mouth watering ones.
