DWIJENDRALAL ROY

 

On 19 th July 1863 A.D. Dwijendralal Roy better known as D.L.Roy was born in the noted "Dewan" family of Krishnanagar.His father was Dewan Kartikeya Chandra Roy , mother Prasannamayee Devi.D.L.Roy paseed the Entrance Examination from Krishnanagar Collegiate School in 1878 & completed F.A. from Krishnanagar Government College in 1880.He went to Mahasin College in Hoogly district and passed B.A. examinations in 1883 and did M.A. from Presidency College , Kolkata in 1884. He bagged the State Scholarship to study Agricultural Science in London.He returned home in 1886 , but faced social boycott for crossing the seas , which was viewed as an offence at that time. He got married to Surabala Devi in 1887. After marrying he joined service under the British Government on 25 th December 1886. He served the government until 28 th April 1909 . During his service he made notable contributions to the Land & Revenue system of Bengal.

D.L Roy is remembered for his historic 7 patriotic plays like, Shahjahan (1909), Mebarpatan(1908), Chandragupta(1911), and social sataires like Biraha(1897), Hasir Gaan(1900). His first English novel "Lyrics of Ind" came out in 1885. He was a noted singer & musician too.His patritic songs, fun songs and tunes are exclusive & known as "Dwijendrageeti" ie songs of Dwijendralal. The song "Dhana Dhanye Pushpe Bhara" is one of his popular compositions. Death of his wife made him more inclined towards religion.

D.L. Roy died of cardiac arrest on 17 th May 1913. Survived by his only son , an eminent singer Dilip Kumar Roy. The birth place of D.L.Roy has no traces left and is now within the Krishnanagar Railway Station premises. A couple of pillars and an epitaph are all to remind you about the great Krishnanagarian.
