Ghurni , the North Eastern suburb of Krishnanagar is famous for the manufacture of clay models & figures.The industy is carried on mainly by the people of the "Kumar" ie potter caste , known as the "Pauls".Clay models of Ghurni have received many awards & appreciation world wide.

It is said that the tradition of clay modelling owes it's origin to raja Krishnachandra Roy, who brought some artisans from Rajshahi district (now in Bangladesh) to Krishnanagar(Ghurni), mainly to make idols for worship.Those artisans & their later generations gradually aquired the skill of clay modelling .Clay models of Ghurni are breath takingly realistic,hand made to the minute details.

Ghurni is also believed to be the birth place of Gopal Bhar -- the celebrated jester of the court of Raja Krishnachandra Roy.
