RELAXATION "A quiet mind
cureth all." - Robert Burns (1759-1796) Create a detailed peaceful retreat in your imagination, and at different times during the day, go there to calm your feelings. Picture it in vivid detail. Perhaps a comfortable room with soft music. A quiet place in the woods. A placid fishing lake. A beautiful garden with flowers, trees, birds, water falls. Perhaps such a place already exists. While you are there, let go of everything except where you are. "There is however, a true music of nature - the song of the birds, the whisper of leaves, the ripple of waters upon a sandy shore, the wail of wind or sea." - John Lubbock (1834-1913) Also, learn and practice physical relaxation techniques: Tense up those muscles, eyeballs to toe tips, and then let them go limp. Breathe easily, thinking of nothing, except breathing easily. Be loose like a fallen towel. Don't try, just let it all go. It is almost impossible to feel stressed or worried as long as your muscles remain relaxed. Practicing this regularly can result in learning to power nap, a wonderful way to relax and refresh. While working at a task, you may feel muscles tighten up, commonly between the arms, and in the shoulders or legs. Consciously let these muscles relax every time you feel them tighten, which might be all day long to start with. Breathe slowly and deeply every time you can think of it. Try not to make it an effort. Be quiet, calm, serene, tranquil, peaceful. Let your body hang loose like a big old sweater. It's easy to miss out on enjoying life if we are always running around frantically trying to do things. These moments are not coming back and we are losing them. Eliminate some things. Slow down and move with an easy manner. And remember - deep, slow breathing is very important in relaxing during tense situations. Have a relaxing pastime such as walking or listening to music. “The
music in my heart I bore,
-William Wordsworth (1770-1850)
