The Squadron was formed in October of 1936, and was based initially at the newly organized aer�dromo de El Soto (a property pertaining apparently to the Duke of Alburquerque), located about 25 km to the northeast of the capital, near Algete (also was known as Field XX). It was first commanded by Pavel Richagov, alias "Palancar", eventually becoming, on the 25th of January 1937, Squadron "Lacalle". After the battle of Madrid in November, the squadron was divided into two detachments: the first, commanded by Ivan Kopets, who took control of the unit from Palancar. The other, headed by Anton Vikentyevich Kovalevsky (Casimiro), was sent to the Southeast, to Torre del Mar  (Malaga) from where participated in the defense of Malaga.
