As a result of the performance of the country in the recently concluded South East Asian Games, the Philippine Sports Commission is proposing to create a "core sports" program which will prioritize the sports where Filipinos excel.
"We really need to adopt more training and re-focus our strategy and funding to sports where we have an edge over other countries," said Chairman Carlos Tuason of PSC at the awarding ceremonies for the Kuala Lumpur SEAG held Nov. 10 at Malacanang.
The Philippines finished fifth place in the overall medal standings with 30 golds, 66 silvers, and 67 bronzes in the Kuala Lumpur SEAG.
Tuason also announced during the awarding ceremony that alongside this program, they are formulating a career development plan for athletes and coaches who will be affected by the sports prioritization.
To be called the National System for Athletes Growth Program, this initiative will provide alternative career paths for affected athletes by extending academic, vocational, technical, and livelihood courses.
This program will start next year.
The athlete-awardees were some 48 national athletes who bagged gold medals in different sports events.
Double-Gold medalist Eduardo Buenavista of athletics who received P200,000 was the biggest beneficiary of the group.
President GMA personally handed over the awards which totaled P3 million.
