Joyeuse City Government

When Queen Lorraine enfeoffed the minstrels, she encouraged them to seek assistance from others. Diane and Jean took the advice to heart and, when Joyeuse began its expansion from a village to a town, they hired two lawyers from Vezias to attend to matters legal and financial. When the town became a city, they hired four more. The barristers are the real controlling force behind Joyeuse (barring the occassional burst of civic activty on Blaise's part).

Renada is one of the two senior lawyers, and rather obviously considers herself in charge. She has taken over control of the Chancellery, accounting for the taxes coming in from the knights and from trade, and for the taxes going out to the baroness and countess. She is 35 years old and has been living in Joyeuse since she was 20. She has a husband and several children.

Marten has also been at Joyeuse for 15 years. His primary duties are to deal with the knights enfeoffed to the Founders and to act as an emissary to the courts of the neighboring Ladies and their Baroness. Diane and Jean often go with him to meet the other nobility, but they play a mostly social role. Everyone knows that, to get something done, one must talk to Marten.

Celestina, Rosalyn, Xavier and Bianca are the newer hires, having served in Joyeuse for seven years. They are all between 25 and 28 years old. Celestina is Marten's assistant, and she is a bit enamoured of the older man. Rosalyn handles most internal city issues and disputes - complaints against neighbors, maintaining roads, and the like. Xavier is responsible for seeing justice done in cases of violent crime. The captain of the Joyeuse City Guard reports to him. Bianca keeps the records (except for Renada's accounting books) and assists the others as her help is needed.
