The Ladies of JoyeuseFour minstrels currently hold the fealty oaths that make them ladies of the realm. They consider themselves the most fortunate of people and their city as a utopian paradise for artists. They are very frequently found moderately drunk at Town Hall, the oldest tavern in the city. They are all between the ages of 40 and 50. Carelia is the soprano. Her high, piping voice is often heard giving voice to the filthiest drinking songs. Blonde and vivacious, she enjoys flitting about town and meeting people. With a strong sense of joie de vivir, she cares more about spending time enjoying "the good things in life" - singing, dancing, carousing - than boring, stuffy politics and such. She has never had children. Diane is the alto and one of the group's two troubadors (that is, she writes high-minded love songs). She used to manage the money and most of the begging for patronage. While intelligent, she is happy to not be scrounging for money and food for the first time and has focused on artistic output. Jean, the tenor, is Diane's lover and the other troubador. They have recently been collaborating on tensons which have been well-received in their neighbors' courts. Diane has developed a more "artistic" tempermant, leaving Jean to do most of the work of raising their son, Fidel. He feels old and settled and secretly longs to go back to the old, lean days. Now that Fidel is nearly a man, his dream may become reality. Blaise is, of course, the bass. A large, powerfully built man, he likes to wear his crown and styles himself "Lord of Revelry." He enjoys making a great show of his concern for his "subjects" and occassionally holds a riotous court. While he takes his duties as a ruler rather more seriously than the others, he has absolutely no idea what he's doing. He has spawned a half dozen children with four different women, all of whom he considers family. (While his good-natured love encompasses them all, the women and their offspring do not get along nearly so well. Blaise is a Lord, after all, and heirs must be named someday...)
