Saromatian Religion

Dieties

The Goddess of Saromatia is the most popular diety. She is worshipped as a single goddess (Saromata), as three Faces (Maiden, Mother, and Crone), and as nine Aspects.

Tariyel is Saromata's son and consort. She gave unto him dominion over the elements, while she retained power over energy and life. He is often worshipped in his four Aspects as the Elemental Lords.

The Queen of Hell, or Dark Queen, is the source of evil in Saromatian cosmology. She is served by demons who tempt mortals in an effort to remove their souls from the great cycle of reincarnations!

Fortuna is not fitted well into the pantheon; theology has yet to determine if she is an interloper, a rival, or an ally. For now, she seems to sit, unconcerned, apart from or above the other dieties, dispensing luck according to her whims.

Clergy

The clergy are mostly female, although male priests are known and accepted. At the higher levels, however, promotion is often a sex-linked characteristic, as the priestess is seen to embody the Goddess. (This applies for the Elemental Lords as well, who are served by male and female priests, but whose High Priests are generally male). Many of the clergy do not cast spells; a few favored priestess can and do. And secular magic, while a gift of the Goddess to a select number of Chosen, depends on secret knowledge, not divine grace. [There is a separate page with details on magical game mechanics.]

It is perfectly normal - and even laudable - for political leaders to also be invested priestesses. It shows that the Goddess blesses their rule and approves of them, in the eyes of many. Very, very few of these are spell-wielding clerics. Most are mere initiates in the faith, able to administer the common sacraments and blessings to their people. The Warrior Maiden, the Corn Mother, and the Queen are the most common Aspects for a noblewoman to serve.

The holy texts, of course, provide a number of interesting stories and myths: Creation of the World
