Episode Ten

Previously, on Survivor Canada

Rick and Diana quietly poll the tribe, plotting which of the original Paleos should go first, and position themselves to play either Jon and Kelley against Shane or Shane and Tabatha against Kelley.  However, Rick begins to doubt Diana, and determines to do anything to make it to finals.  Illness and fatigue spread through the camp, knocking participation to a two-week low.  Kelley wins reward and Diana wins immunity, while Rick is frustrated at a second-place finish in each challenge.  Last of the original Cree, Janei is voted out 5-1-1.

KEYANO, NIGHT 26

Janei is barely out of sight when Rick whoops and hollers with the last original-Cree in Keyano gone.  "Wow, I thought we almost had a close one there!  But Paleo Pride pulled through.  Way to go everyone!  A Paleo will win this game now.  After all the hard work we put into winning all the Tribal Immunities, and only twice any of us losing an individual immunity... We owe ourselves a moment to celebrate!

"Oh, and Hey, now that we've come this far, can we officially change the name of the Tribe back to Paleo?"

"Yes, we all did a great job," Kelley agrees.  "I am proud to call myself a Paleo member.  I wish the best of luck to you all."

"I am so happy that we beat out Cree!" Rick goes on.  "Paleo so deserved this!"

"Yes, we did," Tabatha agrees.  "Paleo pride, just like we said before."

Starting the hike back, Rick mentions to Tabatha, "It kinda sucks that Kelley wastes her 'extra' vote like that."

Tabatha nods.  "Gonna keep a close eye out for the next reward challenge," she says, knowing that an advantage for the final-six vote could be important.

As soon as they get to camp, they build a fire and light it from their torches.  It's the only fire they have.  Kelley immediately starts boiling some water, fearing there has been some neglect in cleaning their cooking equipment.  It's quietly agreed that Kelley will take over cooking duties.

Rick congratulates Kelley on an all-Paleo final six.  Kelley agrees, "We earned this; a Paleo will win."

Rick quietly checks that Kelley is okay with Shane going next, saying that Diana and Jon are going that route.  He suggests that Diana and Jon might have an agreement, and asks Kelley if she'd like to team up "to make sure we have each other's back when it gets to final four?"  Kelley is thoughtful, saying only that she agrees with everything Rick says.

KEYANO, DAY 27

Rick makes a confessional in the morning.  "Paleo has no choice but to start tearing itself apart," he says.  "The way I'm viewing the game, Diana and I sit in the driver's seat ... between the two of us, I think we've made our choice, but amongst all of them, we are still making deals.

"Hopefully I am playing my cards right, and not dealing myself a bad hand... 'cause I don't think I'll get redealt this point in the game."  Rick chuckles.  "The only thing I don't know... is there a Shane, Tab, Kelley and Jon alliance?  Are Di and I totally duped and next to go?  Either way, I want and need the next reward and immunity challenges to fall my way!  They just have to!"

Diana touches base with Rick, and they congratulate each other again.  They've already planned out their strategy, so just chat about their home lives outside the game.

There is a bit of grumbling about the meals.  Kelley reminds everyone that Keyano has been in existance almost as long as Paleo had... and they're coming toward the end of their food stores just as they had in the lean days before the merge.  They have maybe five days of supplies left, but will have to stretch it out to last nine days.  It's going to make the endgame even harder.

Jon finds himself wondering where the game is going next.  He trusts Diana the most and believes that she's been the most honest with him.  Jon has been allied with Diana from Day One, but they haven't really had any strategy sessions.  "I think Rick and Kelley are the strongest... they have both won a fair amount of challenges.  However, Kelley is more under-the-radar and Rick is more 'out there'."

At least one player has picked up on Rick's actions.  "I think Rick has been strong in every aspect of the game and is definitely a force to be reckoned with," Kelley says in a confessional.  She rates Rick as the least honest — "he has broken several alliances" — and, as much as she loves him, has to watch out for Rick.  "You can never know what he's up to," she laughs.

Tabatha feels that Diana is the strongest player so far, and that she has to watch out for Diana, "'cause she has proven herself so strong."  Tabatha doesn't think that anyone is really honest in the game.

Shane thinks that Kelley is the strongest player, but is more worried about Diana.  "Not sure where she stands on things a lot of the time ... she's never concrete about things."

KEYANO, DAY 28

Keyano gather together and extinguish their fire before leaving for the reward challenge.  It seems to foreshadow the upcoming Tribal Council when they will have to vote off one of their own.  Also, it may be a night and a day, until Tribal Council, before they have fire again.  They haven't had a lot of luck with fire-building.

REWARD CHALLENGE, DAY 28

Zoe welcomes the Survivors to their next reward challenge:  "Words Of Another."  They are to rearrange the letters from a short phrase to make as many different words as they can.

It is a simple challenge, and so Zoe is very disappointed that only half of the Survivors put in a real effort.  She calls time and reports the three top-finishers.

Jon comes in second place with 257 correct words.
Third place with 112 correct words is Kelley.
And the winner of the reward with a whopping 365 words is... Rick.

"Congratulations, Rick.  Now you can pick your reward."  Zoe directs him to the reward boxes.

Rick picks and opens one, takes a quick look, then closes the box up again, deciding to keep his reward a secret.  Perhaps because of Rick's secrecy, there is an uncomfortable silence amongst his tribemates — who fail to congratulate him.

KEYANO, DAY 28

It takes several attempts over a couple hours to light up some kindling and get Keyano's fire burning again.  Shane is almost exhausted from the effort.

Jon considers his fellow players.  "Rick and Kelley seem to be the possible ones to win Immunity until the final two.  Plus Rick and Shane seem to be popular amongst everyone."  He isn't worried about Diana and rates Tabatha as the least-active.  "I think I have to watch out for everyone except Tabi and Diana."

Rick rates himself as the strongest player, and the most dishonest.  "I'm probably the one going around telling people the most crap," he laughs.

KEYANO, DAY 29

Jon wants to win immunity.  With six people left, he feels that targets will "come down to me, Kelley and Tabi."  Diana had told him that Shane was with Kelley and Tabatha.  Jon knows that Tribal Council tie-votes are unpredictable, and he doesn't have a lot of faith in Rick voting with them, believing that Rick would go with the majority rather than risking himself.  "Anyways, I'm winning the next Immunity Challenge."

Rick has a different perspective on this immunity.  "I think I can make it past the next Tribal Council without it," he says, but he knows that this immunity will be "critical" in determining which of his tribemates will go.

Tabatha doesn't feel in need of immunity, either.  "I feel safe enough not to win."

Kelley doesn't think she needs immunity terribly badly.  "Though you can never be too safe!"  She feels Jon is the most honest, but doesn't trust anyone except herself.

The only one to have taken votes, having been pushed toward paranoia by Janei, Shane wants to have immunity for once.  "I think I need it, badly."

IMMUNITY CHALLENGE, DAY 29

Zoe welcomes the Survivors to Keyano's fifth Immunity Challenge:  "Treasure Hunt."

This four-part scavenger hunt will send the Survivors out to find items, to identify bird songs, to gather pictograms, and — based on the area they searched — answer a series of questions about a gallery of pictures.

Its a long challenge but pretty straight forward... Zoe wishes the Survivors good luck, and begins the competition.

Jon is the only one to find a bonus item and receives another bonus for finishing first — but he neglects to put the pictogram tiles he'd collected into his treasure chest!

Rick got all the tiles and a second-finish bonus.

Kelley got the pictograms but couldn't identify any bird songs.

Diana fared alright on the first two parts, but skips the pictograms when she sees so many others ahead of her.

Tabatha does well in all areas.  But, like everyone else, rushed through the course so quickly that she is unable to answer anything about the picture gallery.

Counting up the scores, Zoe tells them, "I thank you all for the effort you put into this challenge, I know it was a long one."

Diana finished with 12 points
Kelley gets fouth place with 14 points
At third place with 19.5 points is Rick
24 points earns Tabatha second place
And the winner with 27 points — more than half in bonuses — is Jon.

(Shane did not do the challenge.)

"Jon... you have won this week's immunity," Zoe tells him.

Kelley and Rick give Jon a "way to go!" and Diana also throws in a "Congratulations."

KEYANO, DAY 29

Jon contemplates what's ahead.  "This Tribal Council I will possibly vote whoever I have to."

Rick feels that he has to watch out for everyone.  "It is a pivotal point in the game.  Right now, no one is secure."  He adds that, "Diana has my trust, but it's an arms-length trust at this point.  I have to play my game ... To get me where I need to go, I'd place a vote for any one of them, even Diana."

Tabatha trusts Shane and won't vote for him unless she absolutely has to.  Shane returns these feelings, 100%.

"I don't want to vote anyone off," Kelley says, "but it has to be done at some point."

At the last moment on the hike to Tribal Council, Rick gets a hold of Tabatha.  "Hey, Tab, sorry I didn't catch ya earlier."  Tabatha asks about the plan, if they've made a decision.  "Well," Rick replies, "our 'plan' was kinda shot with Shane not taking part in the challenge..."

TRIBAL COUNCIL, DAY 29

"Welcome, Keyano," Zoe grees them, "to your fifth Tribal Council."

"I know it's getting harder and harder each time to vote... please just remember its a game, not personal, and all but one of you will eventually get voted out."

"Please post your votes for Tribal Council asap... thanks!"

While placing his vote, Rick reaches into his pocket and pulls out a strip of black cloth.  "My reward is to 'silence' someone's vote at Tribal Council.  Before the Immunity Challenge, I figured I would silence Shane in order to make the vote all that more poignant.  However, with his failing to even participate in the challenge, I guess he has given up and that takes the wind out of our sails."  Rick pauses.  "Now, to simply make this a unanimous vote for Shane, I choose to silence Tabatha's vote."

The Survivors sit before the Tribal Council fire while Zoe collects the votes.  There's an eerie silence until Zoe returns.  "Here are the votes, listed as they came in..."

SHANE
My vote is for Shane, he is a great player, and as a result a threat to those that want to win the whole game. His faux pas was when he pretended he wasn't speaking to particular players, assuming that everyone doesn't speaks to each other privately at some point.
Its been nice knowing you, now its time to go.
(Diana)

SHANE
This is probably the hardest vote of the game. Yet this is when its supposed to be hard, eh?
Finally, Paleo is forced to turn on itself.
While it isn't easy, the choice is logical. After not going after 3 challenges in a row, one name almost jumps out as the choice.
My vote is for Shane.
(Rick)

SHANE
I'm voting for Shane. It's just strategy to get me farther in the game, nothing personal. It's been good playing with you!
(Kelley)

KELLEY*
I am voting... Kelly... Nothing personal but its down to the wire!
(Tabatha)

SHANE

SHANE
I'm going to have to vote for Shane  It's a tough vote now that its Paleo vs Paleo but you've been a strong competitor throughout the majority of this game and you are one on the obstacles from me winning.
(Jon)

Shane, your tribe has spoken, you have been voted out of Survivor Canada 3.  You are now the fifth Jury Menber of the game.  Thanks for playing Shane and we look forward to your final thoughts on the game.
