Day 1: Monday, June 16

Orientation:

The first day of the Summer Health Science Institute for Spring Branch Teachers began as an orientation to the goals and processes of the program.

Welcome and Introduction:

Dr. Debra Murray, Debra Samuels, and Robert Williams each greeted the participants and spoke about the goals of the SHSI.

Following a videotape showcasing the different aspects of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, different presenters spoke about their roles in the program. Representatives from the John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Science, the Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center Library, and other outlined their roles.

Katie Schuler-Sheppard followed with an overview of the HEADS-UP program (news and websites).

After the orientation, participants met with Nan Peterson and Melissa Rich to perform an activity on the Stroop Affect and began to make changes and suggestions for the 7th grade HEADS-UP module.
