Day 3: Wednesday, June 18

Dr. Deanna Hoelscher presented on Childhood Obesity Prevention.

Approximately 300,000 deaths each year are currently associated with overweight and obesity. To determine current weight status, calculate your BMI. The BMI is a measure of weight in relation to height. Multiply weight in pounds by 700 and divide by height in inches squared (weight X 700 / height2). A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese, 25 is overweight, and 20-25 is associated with the lowest health risks. 64.5% of Americans have a BMI of 25 or higher.

In children, obesity is associated with increased risk factors for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, other health problems, and social problems. 85% of children diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese.

Dr. Hoelscher also presented some fantastic slides with data on how levels of illness and obesity have increased in children through time.

During lunch, Dr. Jeanne Martin presented on Diabetes, Diabetic Food Items, Cholesterol Counting, and Portion Sizes.

Dr. Martin introduced us to food labels and how to use them, as well as carbohydrate counting and portion sizes.

Dr. Karen Calabra followed up with a discussion about Diabetes in America.
