Day 7

Today we met at the Houston Academy of Medicine / Texas Medical Center Library.

In the morning, Dr. Flavia Nelson discussed the anatomy of the brain, and brain attacks. She identified the parts of the brain and outlined the 12 cranial nerves (Olfactory nerve, optic nerve, oculamotor nerve, aducens, trigeminal nerve, trochlear nerve, facial nerve, auditory nerve, glusopharingeal nerve, vagus, spinal accessory nerve, and hypoglossal nerve), and explained how strokes can affect these parts of thebrain.. She also described and identified the circulatory pathways through the brain that can be blocked or damaged to cause a stroke. She covered the causes, symptoms, and preventative treatments for strokes.

In the afternoon, Dell Davis with the library walked us through PubMed and Medlink Plus, which are two powerful medical journal search engines. Participants learned how to access them, use them to search for a topic, and limit the results to only specific topics. After that, she taught us where to find some very useful medical resources on the web.
