This book really
surprised me. I expected nothing but fluff, but it actually contains
some practical and moderate advice about health and fitness. The
girls recommended eating moderately, working out moderately and regularly
doing something you enjoy, going more "natural" with your hair, and wearing
only a minimun of makeup.
I liked the emphasis
this book placed on being happy with yourself and your own body shape.
The author recommends not comparing yourself to others and reminds the
readers that "...models spend hours having their hair and makeup
done, and cameras can play some serious tricks."* Since this book
is written assuming that the audience will be teens, the author recommends
that, in this time of beginning to make more choices on their own, they
begin to develop healthy habits. The suggestions of food choices
and exercise are actually very good, in most cases. There are even
some great pictures of Tiffani, Elizabeth, and Lark doing some of their
favorite exercises, along with some descriptions of how to do the exercises.
The chapter on skin
describes skin in detail using scientific terms and would actually substitute
for a health book. The author and the girls recommend sticking to
a few basics rather than a lot of expensive skin care products or an elaborate
routine. The author even describes a few more natural products you
might use on your skin, such as baking soda, and describes how to use them.
There are recipes included for facial masks for normal, dry, and oily skin--mostly
using natural ingredients you'd have in your house. The author also
talks about the importance of using sunblock.
The hair and makeup
chapters recommend moderation and common sense. All three girls say
they prefer a more natural look with their hair and that they wear only
a minimum of makeup when not working. The author gives some tips
that tell how to take care of your hair and how to apply makeup moderately.
The chapter on stress
describes what stress is and how to deal with it, especially depending
on the source of the stress. The girls tell how they deal with stress
and the author offers further advice and tips, such as talking to your
parents, talking to friends, writing out your thoughts and feelings,
praying, quilting, and more.
I was pleasantly
surprised with this book. Along with the reasonable advice and tips,
there are great pictures of all three girls throughout the book, tips and
quotes from them, and valuable information. This book was not
about being the prettiest girl, how to have the "best" hair, or how
to get guys to like you. It was filled with practical, moderate advice
that would help any teenage girl feel good about herself and begin thinking
about taking care of herself. I wouldn't hesitate to have my own
teenage daughter read this book.
