WHAT IS IT?

The Sask-Rescue Competitive Team is the elite club of lifeguards within the Sask-Rescue organization that have shown themselves to be willing to work and practice harder than any others to attain the highest degree of training possible and to participate in lifeguard competitions across the Prairies and strive to win those competitions.  Membership in this group is by the invitation of our head coach only.  If you feel that you have what it takes to be a successful member of this elite group, contact our head coach, Chris Clark, to discuss it with him.

Only current members of the Competitive Team are allowed to be assistant coaches and coaches of the other clubs within Sask-Rescue.  Members of the competitive team who become senior coaches get all of their competition expenses paid for by the club throughout the year.  Assistant coaches are required to pay for their own competition expenses.

BRIEF HISTORY

The Sask-Rescue Club was created in 1987 at the YMCA of Saskatoon and originally called Y-Jocks.  In 1989, our club won it’s first of many Saskatchewan Provincial Lifeguard Championships and in the fall of that year, we held our first Prairie Invitational Lifeguard Competition.  1989 was also the first year of many that we represented the province of Saskatchewan at the National Lifeguard Championships.  In fact, since 1989, we have only lost the provincial title twice.  Once in 1990 and in 1992.  Otherwise, our club and the competitive team has won the Saskatchewan Provincial Lifeguard Championships every year since then.  We have also gone onto win the Prairie Invitational Lifeguard Competition, Alberta Provincial Lifeguard Championships and the Manitoba Provincial Lifeguard Championships many times as well.  At the National level, we have competed several times at the National Lifeguard Championships including placing 2nd overall in the 1992 Competition.

In other words, we are the most successful lifeguard training and competing club in Western Canada and if you have been invited to join then we think you have what it takes to continue this tradition.

We are successful because of several factors:

  • Our high expectation of dedication and commitment from our members.  If you can’t commit to practices and competitions, don’t accept the invitation.

  • Our high expectation of professional behavior at all times.  If you can’t commit to representing our club at all times in only the best possible way, don’t accept the invitation.

  • Our high expectation of leadership.  If you aren’t willing to work with other people and to lead and teach our younger members, don’t accept the invitation.

  • Our high expectation of fun and teamwork.  If you aren’t willing to play and have fun and do other things with the rest of the competitive team, don’t accept the invitation.

EXPECTATIONS

The following are the expectations that we have from every one of our competitive team members.  Please make sure that you read through all of them and agree with every statement.

  1. I agree to pay $150.00 per major competition and attend all competitions that are scheduled which is usually three to four per year.  I understand that between the competitions and practices, the club will be spending over $800.00 on each competitive club member.  If you are invited to become a senior coach, you will not be expected to pay.

  2. I agree to attend every Sunday night practice from 3:00pm to 7:00pm to practice my skills and act as an assistant coach so that I might be trained and be ready to become a senior coach.  I understand that I’m not allowed to miss a single practice except in extreme cases and I have notified the head coach one week prior by email.

  3. I agree to maintain a high level of fitness which includes swimming and strength training and not smoking.

  4. I agree to own Competitive Team Jacket (approx $85), red club shirt (approx $25) and black shorts.

  5. I agree to own the Competitive Team Fanny Pack First Aid Kit (approx $120.00) which includes a pocket mask, splint, saline solution, blanket, tensor bandages, tape, scissors, gauze pads, gauze rolls, triangles and glucose.  I understand that the club will continue to supply the consumable items (gauze rolls, gauze pads, triangles, blankets and gloves) but that I’m responsible for maintaining the other items at my own expense.

  6. I agree to act in a professional manner at all times during practices, competitions, at the work place and as a member of the general public.

  7. I agree that when I am working with other agencies like the City of Saskatoon, YMCA or YWCA, University of Saskatchewan, etc. I will maintain a high standard of professionalism and leadership at those workplaces.  I will do everything possible to support such organizations and their workplace expectations and have it reflect well on Sask-Rescue.

  8. I agree to recognize that a mistake is a learning opportunity and I will learn from it.  I will never give up, regardless of the circumstances and I agree to follow all coaches directions at all times.

  9. I will accept feedback from their coach and other members and act on it immediately.  I will also give effective and professional feedback to other members.

  10. I understand that as a senior member of this club, while I will receive coaching directions, I need to be able to self-direct my own practices if need be and work on things that I feel need improvement.

  11. I agree not to waste time with negative comments about anything at anytime.  I realize that people who are negative or say negative things about others do not support the general teamwork goals of our club and will not be tolerated.

  12. I understand that at competitions, I must act in a professional manner that reflects well on the Sask-Rescue Club.  This includes helping other competitors and the competition volunteers in any way that I can.  This also means that if I am underage, I will not consume alcohol at ANY time.  I understand that if I’m in a room where alcohol is being consumed and there is no coach present to vouch for me, it will automatically be assumed that I consumed alcohol and I will be removed from the club.

HOW DO I ACCEPT?

If you have been invited to join the Competitive Team by the head coach, Chris Clark, and you have read through the expectations and feel that you are capable and willing to follow each and every one, email your acceptance of this invitation to: [email protected] and you will contacted as to what comes next.
