HISTORY

In 1987, the club was created under the name of the Y-Jocks Lifeguard Club and we were based out of the YMCA of Saskatoon. In the summer of 1987 and 1988, the Y-Jocks club competed in the Saskatchewan waterfront & summer pool competitions, placing first and/or second in these competitions. The Y-Jocks placed first in the 1989 Saskatchewan Lifeguard Championships in Regina and represented our province in Quebec City at the 1989 National Lifeguard Championships. The club's name was changed to the Y-Rescue Lifeguard Club and the Y-Rescuers Lifesaving Club was also created. The first Prairie Invitational Lifeguard Competition was hosted by our club in the fall of 1989.

In 1991, the Y-Rescue club placed first & second in the 1991 Saskatchewan Lifeguard Championships in Lloydminster and represented our province in St John, New Brunswick at the 1991 National Lifeguard Championships. In May of 1991, the club left the YMCA and became a stand alone non-profit group called the Sask-Rescue Lifeguard Club. We practiced primarily at the Harry Bailey Aquatic Center and the University of Saskatchewan.

In 1992, the Sask-Rescue club placed 2nd overall in the 1992 National Lifeguard Championships in Regina. In the 1992/93 season, the club placed first in every competition in Saskatchewan, including the 1993 Saskatchewan Lifeguard Championships in Yorkton. The club represented our province in Charlottetown, PEI at the National Lifeguard Championships where they placed 4th overall.

In 1993, the Sask-Rescue club once again started up the lifesaving club options and became the Sask-Rescue Lifesaving & Lifeguard Club. The club placed first in the 1994 Saskatchewan Lifeguard Championships in Melfort and represented our province in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the National Lifeguard Championships. The club also placed first at the 1995 Sask. Lifeguard Championships in North Battleford and represented our province in Canmore, Alberta at the National Lifeguard Championships.

We hosted the 1996 Saskatchewan Lifeguard Championships in Saskatoon where our teams placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall. We chose not to attend the National Lifeguard Championships in British Columbia due to the cost. Our club once again placed 1st overall at the 1997 Saskatchewan Lifeguard Championships in Regina and in the following year at the 1998 Championships also held in Regina. Throughout the 1998/99 competition season, our club placed first or second in every competition in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and consistently made up half of the total number of teams at these competitions.

In the 1999/2000 competitive season, we placed first overall in the Saskatchewan Provincial Lifeguard Championships that were held in October of 1999 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, first overall in the 2000 Prairie Invitational Lifesaving & Lifeguard Championships that were held in March of 2000 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and first overall in the 2000 Alberta Provincial Lifeguard Championships that were held in July of 2000 in Calgary, Alberta.

In May of 2000, a member of the Moose Jaw Lifeguard Club competed with our club at the Canadian National Lifeguard Championships. In September of 2000, the Sask-Rescue Moose Jaw Lifesaving & Lifeguard Club was formed with Justin Mercier as its head coach. The Moose Jaw club is now a direct affiliate of the Saskatoon club and placed second overall in the 2000 Saskatchewan Lifeguard Championships and 4th overall in the 2001 Manitoba Lifeguard Championships.

Our club has a long standing reputation of professionalism, leadership and excellence in the aquatic rescue field. Since 1989, we have won the Saskatchewan Lifeguard Championships every time except in 1990 and in 1992. We are recognized on a provincial and national level as being an organization of the highest quality when it comes to training lifesavers, lifeguards and leaders.
