Welcome to the

Salem, Oregon Photo Gallery

Oregon's capitol building has served the state government since October 1,1938.  It was built to replace an earlier, more traditionally designed building that had been destroyed by a fire. Some remains of the earlier building have been left on the grounds of the new structure.

Salem  is beautifully located in Oregon' s *Willamette Valley, about an hour's drive south of Portland, and about an hour and a half away from the Pacific coast.  Now that I've given you all those links to other sites, I have to ask you to wait for looking at them, because this site is created for the benefit of anyone looking for images of Oregon, and especially of the Salem area.

Most of the pictures here are my own, though I have borrowed several historic images from the Salem Public Library Historic Photograph Collections. Currently, all the images are for personal, non-commercial use. Please give credit where credit is due when using these pictures. If you are interested in commercial use of my own images, please contact me

Each of the galleries consists of ten images, with descriptions. There are links to things of interest regarding many of the pictures.  There is also a tiny video slipped in among it all.  It has been fun putting all this together.

Improvement of this site is an ongoing process. Which reminds me, many of the images are quite large, and I will warn you that if you only have a telephone line modem, it may be a little slow downloading many of these images. I am working on putting together some smaller galleries for those without high speed connections.   So far only my latest gallery has the option of high or low resolution images.  That will soon change.

Enjoy your visit to Salem

 * Willamette is pronounced W'lammit, and rhymes with dam it, something frequently done to Oregon rivers. One of my future projects here is a page titled, "How to Speak Oregonian"
