Salem, Oregon Photo Gallery 2

BushParkGazebo.JPG (182429 bytes) This is a closer look at the Bush Pasture Park Rose Garden Gazebo.
HighStSalem.JPG (164059 bytes) High Street, Downtown Salem. Directly behind this is the location of the old pre-1953 Marion County courthouse. To the right is is the new Courthouse Square.
MobileSculptureSalem.JPG (78324 bytes) At the front entrance to the Courthouse Square is what I find to be a most
delightful wind sculpture, called "Galaxy" created by Andrew Carson. A
good wind gets this thing going in all sorts of directions, It is a real kick to
watch. There is a closer view below, but one really needs to see this one in
real life. And just for those of you who may not be able to, I'm working on a tiny video, which
will give you some feel for the this delightful wind sculpture.
GatorSculpture.JPG (110002 bytes) Another example of whimsical Salem artwork is this "gator" which resides along with several other friends, in Wilson Park, adjacent to the capitol building.
MarionCourthouseSculpture.JPG (73634 bytes)

This sculpture is on  the Marion County Courthouse. Inscribed next to it is this:

TO THOSE THAT GAVE THEIR LIVES

THAT WE MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM

THEIR SACRIFICE IS OUR INSPIRATION

THEIR IDEALS OUR HERITAGE

MobileSculpture.JPG (107281 bytes) Here's a closer look at the wind sculpture, "Galaxy", created by Andrew Carson, located at the entrance to the Courthouse Square. The day I had been there, (29th?) of June, it appeared to have just been installed, as the work was not yet complete.
LowerSouthFalls2.JPG (100417 bytes) The Lower South Falls at Silver Falls State Park cascades 93 feet to the cool pool below. This waterfall is another that visitors walk behind as they hike a trail of ten waterfalls.
LowerSouthFalls3.JPG (218741 bytes) Lower South Falls as seen from very near behind it. One of the delights of hiking through this park is that waterfalls are not seen as distant objects, but visitors very nearly become one with the sparkling cascades.
MintoBrownTrail.JPG (95313 bytes) Along the banks of the Willamette is Minto-Brown Park. The park is a blend of recreational, agricultural and environmental uses. As visitors hike, bike or jog along about 10 miles of paved trails, they pass through fields of crops, forest, ponds and streams, as well as raccoons, deer and hundreds of Canada geese. Note the low level of the Willamette river.  2001 has been an unusually dry year. During many winters this trail is even covered by the river.
Pres Taft in Salem 1911.jpg (30650 bytes) United States President W. H. Taft visited Salem in 1911. From the Salem Library historic photo collection, Salem, Oregon.
