Historic Mission Mill Museum

LeeHouseBoonHouse.JPG (89924 bytes) The Jason Lee and John Boon houses, located at the historic Mission Mill Museum. The Lee House (left) was originally occupied by 4 families when it was completed in 1841. The smaller Boon House, was built in 1847, but is the oldest surviving single family house in Salem.
LeeHouseInterior2.JPG (51337 bytes) Inside the Lee house are four "apartments",  nothing more than single rooms for complete families. this scene is from the Lee apartment. The furniture on display here is from that era, but not original to that house.
JasonLeeHouse.JPG (102579 bytes) Another view of the Jason Lee House.
MissionMill.JPG (67231 bytes) Mission Mill Museum. This is the front building of the grounds that includes early (1840's) Salem homes, a church (1858) and the Thomas Kay Woolen Mills.
KayWoolenMill.JPG (75903 bytes) Driving along 12th street in Salem, the old Thomas Kay Woolen Mill stands out boldly, but today is only part of the Mission Mill Museum. Founded in 1889, this mill became an important textile plant in Oregon, but self guided tours are the the only production this grand old mill generates any more.
CardingMachine.JPG (70960 bytes) Among the many machines in the Kay Mill is the carding machine, which combs and untangles the wool fibers, parts the web of wool formed by it into separate strips, all ready for spinning.
Loom.JPG (78834 bytes) A Thomas Kay Mill loom, like the carding machine above, still ready for action.

MillRace.JPG (104919 bytes)

In the 1890s, a good mill had to get its power from somewhere, and this mill race provided the power to this plant. Visitors will notice a series of shafts, pulleys and belts which drove these machines, drawing power from a horizontal water wheel, which today is hooked to a generator, producing electricity.
KayMill1937.jpg (30159 bytes) In my ongoing effort to provide some historic photographs, I've snitched another great shot from the Salem Library Historic photo collection. This is the T. Kay Mill in 1937. However, even I would have liked to gotten some interior working photos, so I'll have to do some more searching. I love those cars out front.
MillShop.JPG (72204 bytes) The forge room of the Mentzer machine shop at the T. Kay Woolen Mill. An institute of the caliber has to have a good machine shop to keep running, and this is the original item, with all the original tools. The machine shop is great fun to visit, but not easy to photograph, so this is my only shot within its walls.
