Salem. Oregon Photo Gallery 3

This is an 1880 image of the Ladd & Bush Bank, which today houses the US Bank in downtown Salem. A few things have changed over the years, like now there are lots of trees lining the paved walkway, and parking isn't so obviously easy. From the Salem Library historic photo collection, Salem, Oregon. |
| The same building today (July 2001). While US Bank is over the door, there is still an emblem of Ladd & Bush Bank est. 1868 next to the door. | |
| Salem Courthouse Square, the city's hub for mass transit, and the home of the sculpture "Galaxy", which can be seen near the entrance at the right, somewhat hidden by a tree. | |
| If you couldn't quite make out "Galaxy" in the last picture I understand, so here's another shot of it. I've wanted to include a video of this but all I can upload from my pokey modem is a wee clip you'll want to look at twice. Here's a look at Galaxy in 3 whole seconds of video action. | |
| The faade of the old Ladd & Bush Bank building is quite ornately decorated. | |
| The Salem Riverfront Carousel is a handcrafted carnival style carousel styled after those of 100 years ago. Community volunteers carved each figure by hand over the last couple of years and the carousel was just opened this June 2, 2001. | |
| With the exception of 2001, Salem is traditionally a very rainy location. Carousel designers therefore chose to put it indoors, for which this Riverfront Park building was custom built. | |
| No, this is not in Salem, but it is only a short drive from here. Yaquina Head Lighthouse is just about 3 miles north of Newport, and well worth the visit (and the $5 the National Park Service will charge you). Built in 1873, it is the tallest lighthouse on the Oregon coast. | |
| Inside Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and yes, you can go inside this lighthouse, which makes it all the more interesting to visit. | |
| The light inside Yaquina Head Lighthouse flashes in a coded sequence which serves as an aid to navigation. When the bulb burns out the second bulb automatically swings into place to keep the light going without missing a beat. A signal then goes off to alert the USCG, which promptly replaces the burned out bulb. Note the unique glass surrounding the top of the lighthouse, it is actually a Fresnel lens which bends the light to send a concentrated beam out to sea. |
