Chakrata

90kms. from Dehradun (three and half hrs. away) lies the quaint little cantonment. Spanning across two hills of Chakrata and Kailana, in Garhwal, at 7,000 ft above sea level - Chakrata was established by Colonel Hume and fellow officers of the British 55th Regiment, 125 years ago.

The town lies above the Yamuna Valley in the Garhwal Himalayas, and is approached from Dehradun, either via Mussoorie, or Kalsi. But the army here are very careful of who (and how many it) opens its doors to.

Once in Chakrata, you don't mind all the fuss made by the army. The town - which is built all along a ridge - has some magnificent views of the Himalayas and everything around is delightfully green.

A walk in any direction from the town guarantees good amount of birds and butterflies. Read/See more ...

Tiger Falls

5kms. walk from Chakrata town is the beautiful Tiger falls, at 312 ft one of the highest falls in India. However, be prepared for a strenuous walk.

For the light hearted, there is a longer (17kms.) motorable road that takes you very close to the falls. Though this route is not frequented by the share cabs (Utility vehicles), you could strike a deal for a return journey of around Rs.600 to and fro from Chakrata town.

Once at the falls, besides the beauty of the falls, a wide range of birds, butterflies and dragonflies can keep you busy for hours. Read/See more ...

Deoban

At a height of 9,400 ft and 13 kms. from Chakrata. High on top of the mountains north of Chakrata lies a beautiful alpine meadow amid a deep dark deodar forest.

An overnight hault at Deoban Forest Rest House would be a brilliant way to explore this beautiful place.

A short walk takes you to Vyas Shikar, a vantage point from where on a clear day one can see all the major peaks of the might Garhwal range. En route look out for the amazing variety of wild flowers and the butterflies they attract.

Also expect a large variety of birds. Read/See more ...
