Lacy Stole

This is made in three parts; first the main body, which should cover the back and just around arms, then you crochet on either side to make the length. The pattern is stated first exactly as I made it, but I have added some ideas for variation at the end. The pattern is versatile, since it is an open pattern and not bulky if used as a scarf as well as a stole, or if made larger a beautiful shawl.

I don't have any pictures of the complete stole yet, but I scanned in sections so you can see what the pattern and beading look like. I think the pattern is probably best expressed in symbols, but I am working on that as I have never really used symbols before.

Also, when I was working on the idea for this pattern I tried it out as a Coaster, which you can see here. It is the
Reversible Lattice Coaster. I hope to have that pattern written out very soon,as it still has a kink or two to work out.

Finished Size:
Approximately 70" x 16"

Gauge:
5 Inverted Vs across = 3 1/2"
9 Rows = 4"
To make this gauge swatch, ch 20 and follow pattern for 9 rows
(not important, but it will give you an idea of how I crochet and whether you will need more yarn for your gauge)

Materials:
10.5 ounces sportweight boucle yarn [I used 6 skeins (1 3/4 ounces each) Bernat Baby Coordinates, which is an arylic boucle with s shimmery thread running through it]
148 6mm Crystal Beads (or any type to suit the yarn)
G hook
tapestry needle to weave in ends

Note:
(1) ch3 counts as dc throughout
(2) Thread all beads on one skein before starting. Leave this skein to use in the beaded rows only, to minimise the "wear and tear" on the yarn by pushing the beads along while you work.

Special Stitches:
Inverted V:
yo, insert hook in first st indicated, pull through, yo pull through 2 lps (2 lps on hook), yo insert hook in second st indicated, pull through, yo, pull through 2 lps, yo pull through 2 lps
X Stitch: (worked over the 2 stitches indicated) sk st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st.
Beaded sc: stitch is worked with wrong side facing you. Thread beads onto yarn before beginning. Insert hook into st indicated, yo, pull through, move bead as close as possible to stitch, yo (with bead between hook and work) pull through

Rows 40-42: Repeat Side Rows 2-3, once, repeat Side Row 2.
Row 43: Repeat Side Row 39, ch 3, turn.
Row 44: sk st, dc in next st and each st to end, Fasten off.
Weave in all ends.

VARIATIONS:

(1) Try with same size yarn, but larger hook, H or I (or larger) for a lacier, lighter effect.
(2) Add fringe, if using a different yarn. The yarn I used would not last well as a fringe.
(3) Use thread and an F or G hook, for a really lightweight stole, suitable for warmer climates.

DIFFERENT SIZES:

The Body can be made smaller or larger in 2 ways:
(1) Increase/Decrease starting ch, ensuring it remains a multiple of 3, plus 2, or
(2) Repeat pattern for as long as desired.
The Sides can also be increased by simply working main pattern repeat for as long as desired
