Note: This pattern is really simple and can be made as large as you want by simply increasing the beginning chain and then doing as many rows as you want it to be tall. The stripes can be more than two, or made of 2 rows of sc instead of 1 to suit a larger purse. Then simply make the handle a little larger to match.
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn: a couple ounces Main Colour (MC) and Contrasting Colour (CC) (may be less, I can't estimate as I used from stash of used skeins)
F hook
something to stuff the button
BODY OF BAG
With MC ch 31
Rd
1: sc into 2nd ch from hook and into next 28 ch, 3 sc into 1st ch. Do not turn. Sc into other side of next 29 chs, 2sc into last ch. Do not join rounds. Mark beginning of each round with contrasting yarn.
Rd 2-3:sc into each sc.
Rd 4: Repeat Rd 2, changing colour on last stitch by inserting hook into last sc of Rd 2, yo and pull through as usual, then yo with CC and pull through loop
Rd 5: with CC, rpt Rd2, changing to MC on last stitch.
Rd 6: rpt Rd 4.
Rd 7-18: rpt Rd 2
Rd 19: sc into middle of one side of bag, ch12, skip 8 chs, ss into next 4 chs, sc to corner of bag (this will be the BACK of the bag). Fasten off. Weave in ends.
OPTION: If you make a much larger purse, the handles may need to be sturdier, so make 4 and join 2 together (wrong sides together) and ss/sc all around, then attach handles to purse as before.
You can also increase the length of the handle itself to cater for a larger purse, by increasing the starting chain; or increase the width of the handle by adding additional rows of sc on either side of the handle.
The purse on the right is from the same basic pattern but starts out with ch 20, and the handle with ch 35. It is the prototype purse and was fairly small, so I did not make the card case.
BUTTON
With CC ch 2
Rd
1: 6 sc into 2nd ch from hook (do not join.)
Rd 2:2 sc into each sc of Rd 1.
Rd 3: sc into back loop of each sc in Rd 2.
Rd 4: dec over next 2 sc (6 times)(start stuffing with tail end, fiber fill, cloth, pantyhose, whatever).
Rd 5: dec over next 2 sc (3 times).
Rd 6: ss into next st. Fasten off and leaving tail to sew opening closed and to attach button to bag to FRONT of bag
HANDLE(make 2)
With MC ch 46
Row
1: sc into 2nd ch from hook, rpt to end, Fasten off MC, leaving tail to attach handle to bag. (Right side, do not turn)
Row 2: join CC to first sc of Row 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc into next sc, sc into next 5 sc, 2 sc into next sc, sc into next 7 sc, 2 sc into next sc, sc into next 5 sc, 2 sc into next sc, sc to end of row. Fasten off CC. Do not turn.
Row 3: join MC to first sc of Row 2, sc in same st as join, sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc to end of row. Fasten off, leaving tail to attach handle to bag. Weave in extra ends.
Sew ends of handles to 2nd row from top, inside bag, with right side facing out, and aligning both handles opposite each other.
CREDIT CARD/MONEY CASE(optional)
With CC, ch 14 (or as wide as your credit cards etc)
Body of case: 2 sc into 2nd ch from hook, repeat to end. Do not turn, sc in opposite sides of chs, continue sc into each sc until the case is large enough (approximately 19 rds), end at corner of case with sc into corner st. Do not fasten off.
To attach to bag: Ch 20,wrap chs around one handle (take care not to twist ch), ss into same corner st, ss into each ch, ss into first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Please Note: I have tried very hard to explain what I have done, but I may not have been successful :)
