WINGS
: (make 2)

With CC ch 8.
Row 1: dc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in each of next 6 ch. 2 ch, turn (2 ch counts as 1 dc and ch).
Row 2: dc in first st *skip 1 st, in next st work (dc ch dc)*. Repeat from * to * 3 times. Turn.
Row 3: Skip first dc, ss in ch sp, 3 ch (counts as tr), in same ch sp work (tr 2 ch tr), dc in next ch sp, ch dc in next ch sp, in last ch sp work (2 tr 2ch 2 tr). Turn.
Row 4: Skip first tr, ss in next tr, 3 ch (counts as tr), in 2 ch sp work (tr 2 ch 2 tr), ch skip 1 dc, dc in ch sp, skip 1 dc, in next 2 ch sp work (2 tr 2 ch 2 tr), 3 ch. Turn.
Row 5: Skip first tr, tr in  next tr, *in 2 ch sp work (htr dc htr), tr in each of next 2 tr, 3 ch, dc in next dc, 3 ch, tr in each of next 2 tr.* Repeat from * to * once. 5 ch turn.
Row 6: dc in 2nd ch from hook, ss in each of next 3 ch (forms small wing tip), 5 ch, skip 3 sts, ss in next dc, 3 ch, skip 2 sts, dc in next st, 3 ch, ss in next dc, 3 ch, tr in next st, 5 ch, skip next 2 sts, dc in next dc, 3 ch, skip 2 sts, tr in top of 3 ch.5 ch turn.
Row 7: Skip 3 ch lp, dc in next 5 ch lp, 5 ch, dc in next lp, 3 ch, ss in next ss, 5 ch turn.
Row 8: Skip 3 ch lp, htr in next 5 ch lp, 5 ch, dc in 2nd ch from hook, ss in next ch (forms large wing tip), 2 ch, tr in last 3 ch lp.
Fasten off.

EDGING:
This is worked around 3 sides of wing, omitting straight side, which will be attached to body of butterfly.
First wing: Attach MC to beginning of Row 1.With small wing tip on the right, work counter clockwise around three sides of wing.
*Into side of each row work (dc, 3 ch, dc)* to small wing tip. Ss around wing tip. Into all 5 ch lps, work (dc, 3 ch, dc) 3 times, into all 3 ch lps work (dc, 3 ch, dc) twice, until large wing tip. Work (dc, 3 ch dc) once into 2ch sp, ss around wing tip, (dc, ch 3, dc) into 2 ch sp, then repeat from * to * until end of Row 1. Fasten off.

Second Wing:  Attach MC to end of Row 1.With small wing tip on the left, work counter clockwise around three sides of wing.
*Into side of each row work (dc, 3 ch, dc)* to large wing tip. Ss around wing tip. Into all 5 ch lps, work (dc, 3 ch, dc) 3 times, into all 3 ch lps work (dc, 3 ch, dc) twice, until small wing tip. Work (dc, 3 ch dc) once into 2ch sp, ss around wing tip, (dc, ch 3, dc) into 2 ch sp, then repeat from * to * until beginning of Row 1. Fasten off.

BODY:
With CC, ch 10. 10 dc into 2nd ch from hook (head formed), ss in next 7 ch, dc in last ch. Working on the other side of beginning chs, ss in each of 8 ch, ss in first dc, Fasten off.

ANTENNAE:
With CC cut a 3” length of thread. Fold in half, forming loop. Insert hook into 3rd dc of head, pull loop of thread partly through st, yo with both ends of thread pull completely through loop, tighten.

You may wish to stiffen the antennae with fabric glue, or some commercial stiffener. They can also be made with chain stitches, or thin wire or plastic for a sturdier effect.

ASSEMBLY:
Sew each wing to side of body, making sure the wings are symmetrical.
  Attach Butterfly to Bookmark leaving wings opened or closed.
