A Trip to Russia and Ukraine

In September 2000, we spent three weeks travelling in Russia and Ukraine.  The trip included St. Petersburg, Novgorod, Moscow, Kiev, and portions of rural Ukraine.  Since David had been studying Russian, we were able to do some travelling on our own.  Our Russian friends at home had arranged for their friends in St. Petersburg to provide some help, and we had also made contact with distant relatives who live near Moscow with whom we planned to visit.  David's family emigrated from present-day Ukraine in 1904-05.  Ruth had done extensive genealogical research about David's family history and had made arrangements to participate in a group roots tour in Ukraine.  As it turned out, no one else signed up for the group tour, so we had a private tour.  Here is a selection of some of the photographs from our trip.  The photos have been sized to strike a balance between clarity and speed of downloading.  Each page should load in 30 to 60 seconds with a telephone modem connection.
