Red Square and the Kremlin

Red Square on the east side of the Kremlin.  St. Basil's Cathedral is on the left, Lenin's Tomb on the right.  The yellow building, which is behind the walls of the Kremlin, is the Supreme Soviet building.  The tower, Savior Tower, is one of many along the Kremlin walls.  Red Square has been called Red Square for hundreds of years, because "red" in archaic Russian means "beautiful."  (Nothing to do with the Bolsheviks.)  One nice thing about it is that there are no cars, so it is actually one of the more peaceful places in Moscow.  Click here for a closer picture of St. Basil's.

On the west side, the Kremlin is bordered by the Alexander Garden.  It looks empty in this photo, but whenever the sun came out, it was full of people.  There are vendors selling hot dogs and soda.  Not far from here is a stand advertising "Bliny to the people."
