Activities
Catamaran
- Yes there's a "cat" laying on the beach just waiting to be
sailed. And it might just happen this glorious year of the new millennium. Fruit
Season - If you are lucky to come during the fruit season,
don't over do it. After you eat the durian, remember to drink some water
from its shell to cool your body down. Remember, dukong and durian can be
really quite heaty. Fishing
- Yep, in the right season, Terengganu is a regular seafood heaven.
fresh fish, squid, prawns all come off the fishing boats every
evening, fresh from a day's catch; or you can hire a boat and fish
for them yourself.
Durian
Hunting - a nearby Bukit is rumored to have the best
durians around the region.
Kenyir
Dam - Just 1 hour's drive westward. A lovely serene dam
and wildlife reserve. see map
Wayang
Kulit - Once a year the local Taikongs sponsor such events
along the beaches.
Naming
of the Catamaran - After many thoughtful sessions, still
no name has been found. Please mail to [email protected]
to nominate some proposed names...
Scavenge
Hunting - A Japanese Patrol Boat is reported by the locals
to have been sunken just North of Rumah Yamin during WW2. As recently as
15 years ago, some local fishermen had been sighted lobster hunting in
the wreck.
Diving
and Snorkeling
- Pulau Bidong, Pulau Redang are just 1
hour or so away by boat..
Traditional
Massage : or "urut" gets mixed feeling from the recipients.
Some love and say its relaxing while some others just cannot understand
why they are paying to get tortured. "Hassan"
(pronounced ah sang) is the Chinese Muslim Sadist.
Clean
the beach :
If you don't really clean the beach we won't be offended lah, but
please make sure you and your guests don't leave more litter there ok?
Just bag what you discard, and dump in the public bins along the main
road on your way out.
Treasures
As an activity for the kids, going treasure hunting along the beach can
be fun especially in the rainy season when there is a lot of driftwood
etc washed up on shore. Dum
: a relaxing game of Malaysian checker's. Don't think its so easy. Chess
players don't sneer, The board is often part often part of the table
itself with the squares indented over the years of playing using bottle
caps as seeds. Try it, don't think its just lepak Fresh
Coconuts : Just ask the neighbors like Pak Daik who runs
the tea stall next door, and they could arrange either a villager (Leman
Kling for example) to pluck some young coconuts, or a trained monkey
instead. Remember that these monkeys can be quite wild sometimes, so be
careful how your children handle it.
Petting
Zoo : Cows and Goats, chickens, etc could be seen
wandering around the house and surroundings. Just keep a watchful eye on
the children's interaction with the animals please..
Exploring
- Regular exploring of the hills around is encouraged. The land is
fairly flat, with a lot of "Gong"s ( plateau's) but there are
a small range of fairly high hills inland of Rumah Yamin at Batu Rakit. See
map. These hills would hold a lot of treasures like special
strains of kampung durian. Hire a bike or bicycle to explore the delightful
kampung roads
Eating
- You don't have to cook if you don't want to. There are lots of
restaurants and stalls along the coast. You'll get delicious Terengganu fare
like keropok, fried seafood, goreng pisang, kueh mueh, otok otok, nasi minyak, laksam, nasi lemak and lots more it you dare...
Beach -
The most abundant resource of enjoyment is right in front. Kilometers
long beaches stretch north till Kelantan. The sea is still and beautiful
during the good season of May till October.
