Loomis Family

First, I wish to thank Ray Brown for providing the photocopied pages of "A History of Ancient Windsor" by Henry R. Stiles and "History of Torrington, Connecticut," by Rev. Samuel Orcutt. Most of the information about the Loomises on these pages are taken from those two works. Without Ray's initial urging and help, this project would never have been started.

I also relied heavily on "A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England," Vols. 1-4, by James Savage. I used excerpts from "The Descendants of Joseph Loomis in America," by Elisha S. Loomis, pub. 1908; "The History of Suffield, in the Colony and Province of Massachusetts, New England" by Hezekiah Spencer Sheldon; "Pioneers of Massachusetts," by Charles Henry Pope; "Early Connecticut Marriages," by Frederic W. Bailey; ;"The Connecticut Barbers: A Genealogy of the Descendants of Thomas Barber of Windsor, Connecticut," by Donald S. Barber, M.D.; excerpts from a Loomis Family Bible, now at the Bradford Co. Historical Society, Towanda, PA; and excerpts from "Thomas Holcomb and other Simsbury, Connecticut Settlers," by Deanna Holcomb Bowman, Vol I; and various other publications. There are very few original sources quoted in this body of work, but most of the secondary sources are well-documented. When possible, I have tried to resolve conflicts between sources or within the publication.

Lately, circe 2008, I have been adding information and sources from the New England Historic Genealogical Society databases. Most of this information is transcriptions of vital records. Again, I have notated conflicts of information.

I've added a fourth section to The Loomis Family in Colonial America. The first section is a Descandant Narrative report produced by Legacy Family Tree software. It is a timeline of individuals from the first seven generations of the Loomis family who resided in colonial America, starting with patriarch Joseph Loomis and his wife, Mary White. The second section is a web-friendly report by generation, produced by PAF 5 software. It includes a third section, a GEDCOM report that can be downloaded and used in your genealogy software. The fourth and newest section is a similar report produced by Legacy Family Tree software. I'll leave it to you to decide which of the two similar sections you prefer. All sections contain the same information, only the formats are different.

I will continue to add more information and attempt to fill in the holes that now exist. While researching several of the cemeteries in Litchfield and Tolland counties, it becomes utterly apparent there are more descendant lines than recorded here. For now, the period of time covered is from 1630's when Joseph and Mary Loomis settled in Windsor, Connecticut along the banks of the Connecticut River, until just after the end of the War for Independence in the late 1700's.

My direct line in the Loomis family is: (Helen10, Orlando9, Francis8, Theodorus7, Wright6, Seth5, Stephen4, Stephen3, Joseph2, Joseph1). This line eventually settled in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, starting with Wright Loomis, about 1795. Another group of his cousins, Augustus Loomis' family, also settled in Bradford County about the same time (1796). Both families had a large impact on the settlement of the area.

All sections of The Descendants of Joseph Loomis in Colonial America have been revised as of October 9, 2008. There are now over 7,250 Loomis descendants' names and information. Click on one of the buttons below to view the reports. There is a gedcom available in the PAF report, but it's over 3Mb in size.

Descendant Narrative Report

The PAF5 and the Legacy Family Tree reports of the Loomis Family in Colonial America use a style by generation rather than line of descent. I leave it to you, the reader, to choose which format you prefer. For either report, you can start with the patriarch, Joseph Loomis, with the Surname List, or the Name Index.
