Review - By Vega
Over the span of several years. The former: Squaresoft, gave to us a wide variety of Final Fantasy games, each with it's
own taste... so to say. Yet, with the release of a more, mediocre Final Fantasy VIII, FF gamers were not the least bit
prepared for the masterpiece that was, Final Fantasy IX, and in my opinion, is the best Final Fantasy released.
Previous Final Fantasy's, all had one thing in common (excluding the use of Moogle's, Chocobo's and Cid). They all held
that 'futuristic' appeal, yet, on the release of Final Fantasy IX, to the instance that you put the disk in your
playstation, you'd find that there is no aspet of being 'futuristic' no, this game took afew steps down in the ages
and now looks like what perhaps the late 1800's had to offer. The game is in no shortcomming of the word "Excellent"
From the magnificantly crafted magical abilities, the majesty each weapon, even from the most basic, had to offer, and
not to mention, the absolute splendor of the summon spells, here on regarded to as; Eidolons.
I can honestly sit here, and write this review without doubting Final Fantasy IX the slightest, I've yet to find some
sort of a fault in the gameplay, I've yet to discover a flaw in the soundtrack, I've yet to find a negative in the game
so far (And that's saying alot considering I've completed the game atleast 10 times). Anyway, back to the game, It's systems
have been changed once again, to give it that classical Final Fantasy appeal, the individual learning of abilities depending
on what equipment you have on your character, the 'Tetra Master' card system, which in my opinion is the most enjoyable
sub-game that any final fantasy has ever had. Heck, this game is easy to get a hang of, simple to master and is the most
enjoyable I've played so far, due to it not giving me these agonising tutorials.
The game starts with an absolutely awe striking opening FMV sequence, the arrival of the thief group 'Tantalus' into
Alexandria, however, you do not start off with use of the main character 'Zidane' no, first major control is given to the
local Black Mage of the group, Vivi. This allows you to explore the extent of Alexandria, and the goal of Vivi to begin with
is to sneak into Alexandria castle to view the play 'I want to be your Canary' that Tantalus is there to perform. But wait,
what does a thief group have to do with simply performing for Alexandrian royalty and Treno nobles? Simple, the goal of this
group is to abduct the lovely Princess Garnet Til Alexandros, here on regarded to as; Garnet.
So now, we have Zidane needing to sneak into the castle, in which he executes infront of the eyes of all, they of course completely oblivious to his true intent, Blank too there for help, now. Further on in the castle we have Garnet wandering around beneath the concealment of a simple hood, looking for her ways of escape... this conflicts, and thus the disappearance
of Garnet occurs, Zidane following closely behind. But what of that armored man that has been seen earlier on eh? Well,
control soon is offered to Captain Aldebert Steiner (Spelt something like that) who's goal is simple, find Garnet and
bring her back to her mother, Queen Brahan. However, all doesn't go too smoothely for the captain, after all, he does have to
deal with Zidane and his Tantalus buddies, as well as a rebelling princess who does not intend to return... It all goes to
bad, then to worse for our captain, as Vivi is soon brought onto the ship, which he fled to of free will to escape from
Alexandrian Pluto Knights. Which is another burden on our Brave, Sir Knight. Anyway, here's the default party, all assembled
on the deck of the Theatre ship, we have Garnet, Zidane, Vivi, Steiner, Blank, the rest of Tantalus... mission complete
dispite the extra weight. So, their focus is fleeing Alexandria now... to avail or not? Brahan launches an amassing
'bomb' at the theatre ship, capable of destroying the ship, the party... And Garnet, who for some reason, has inactive
Eidolons in her combat window's... What's this all mean, why would the queen put her own daughters life in harms way?
I guess you'll have to play on and find out.
