Actually, there isn't very much to put on this page at present. Eventually, I would like to post some pictures of family camping trips. While growing up, our summer vacations were almost always a "primitive" camping trip to the mountains of eastern Tennessee, northeast Georgia, or western North Carolina. By "primitive", I mean there were no accommodations for bathrooms, showers, or running water. For "running water", we usually took our own water or had several large containers that we would carry and fill at a nearby spring. We also had to carry all provisions including food, tent, tables, tarps, and stools - and EVERYTHING else we would want to use during the trip. I always enjoyed our camping trips, but as a kid, I doubt that I appreciated the full measure of what was going on. For my parents to load themselves, 4 children and ALL provisions for a week in the woods, it was a major undertaking, and certainly not within the usual definition of "vacation" for most parents. Our vacation camping trips did show me the wonders of nature and the outdoors and (hopefully) a respect for it as well. Even now, sitting beside a quiet stream and listening to the water as it runs, brings a great feeling of peace and calm.
We also have a canoe that gets used occasionally. I have to admit that while living in south Georgia, I used it a couple of times in the local rivers and didn't find it to be THAT fun. A canoe can be a fairly unstable "vessel" and when I see an alligator while paddling a canoe, I get a VERY uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. Snakes are unsettling enough, but an alligator is a whole different story. But rivers and streams in north Georgia are a little different, so maybe I can borrow it for a weekend or two and get in a little paddling time.
My father has hundreds of photos taken of our various camping trips over the years and I hope to get some of them in the near future to scan and post here. |
