"Your Mother Wears Army Boots"

Well, she did. She served on Eisenhower's staff in Paris at the end  of WWII. That's where she met my father, who was also in the service. He later went on to be a Korean war veteran and served in the 5th Special Forces Group during Vietnam. My brother was a medic in the 82nd Airborne Division. Hell, I can even boast of an uncle who was a tank driver in the Battle of the Bulge. As for myself, I served proudly in the US Naval Submarine Service.

Why the brief military genealogy lesson? Well, over the last few months, this eZine has been receiving mail from a few pissed off veterans who, for some strange reason, have the notion that this publication does not respect the various veterans groups and organizations in this country. I think this rumor came to pass as a result of my deciding to not run a couple of stories that had to do with veterans in our pages. This decision was made with a journalistic critique however, and not a bias against veterans.

Rollin' The eZine For Riders, is about riding, period! Where you went, what you did, what you saw. If the various Veterans' groups out there reading this have an event they would like to promote, or a rally or ride they would like to share with us, then send it to our submissions department and we will be happy to print it. However, if the stories involve individual stories of heroism under fire, or bravery above and beyond the call of duty, there are simply better places than here to discuss them.

While the above may sound harsh, please understand that there are many excellent on-line and print magazines that are much better equipped to handle these types of stories, and their target demographics are in line to support that.

We here at Rollin' have nothing but the highest respect and regard for the men and women in this country who have given their time, and sometimes their lives, in support of freedom. Never will you see us portraying veterans in a bad light, and never will we decide against running a story based solely on the merits of it having come from a veteran.

Over the past couple of months, I have taken the time to personally answer emails from veterans who have felt slighted. In each case, I have been able to explain my position to their satisfaction. My reason for using this months column to explain this to you is to hopefully reach those who may feel the same way, but have not taken the time to write.

So, on behalf of the entire staff of Rollin', and especially Bruce "B2" Barge (US Army, RET.), Ray "Ratchet" Palubin (US Air Force, RET.) and myself, Larry "SideShow" Fitch (US Navy, RET), we salute you, our nation's veterans, and are proud to have you among our readers.

Take care and ride safe.

Larry
