Evolution: PatienceIf the image is clear, and you can convey it convincingly, perhaps then the talent isn't a talent, but a gift. I was fourteen when I recieved my first real adult appology. I had no idea that I wasn't being
given the "time of day" because of who I was, or appeared to be while I was growing up. No one
expected anything from me other than my parents, which was odd because I always seemed to do well in
school. But the person who appologized to me was my elementary school principal. I had caught the
attention of a local newspaper to recieve a guest spot article in which I chronicled the city's
attitude and the "looser" steryotype. At the time I was the youngest to have been selected to this
award given out annually. (I was subsequently replaced by a thirteen year old some years later who
got more spot light and given that title, but I won't hold anything against her.) "I'm sorry that we
never appreciated your writting talent." I was in the middle of trying to light a production for
elementary students. I brushed it off, but later after the production when I had time to
view other issues at hand, I wondered if they were trying to squash me in some subtle way. I would like
to imagine that I am not nearly as petty as my mother, she laments over certain individuals that
seemed to have caused my family grief over the years, particuarlly teachers I have had, although she
doesn't seem concerened about those that have wronged my brother. I can only imagine that I was
shortchanged in some way, but not having the experience what I could have had, I cannot miss it. I
know that my life will balance itself out. I will get my due in my own time.
Jessie Raycraft has always been the center of a world that was not of her own making. At the age of fifteen she takes control of her life in hopes that she will understand her past to create her destiny.
This is something that has changed over time since I was old enough to write short stories. After considerable editing and a discovery of character(s) I started re-writing this tale in December of 2001.
