For
about nine years, it has been my pleasure and privilege to serve
as a volunteer for The Resettlement Program of the Jewish Family
Service. Initially my family was a 'host' family for a couple who
had recently emigrated to this country. Our goal was to help them
acclimate to their new life in any way that we could; and it was
a truly wonderful, interesting and gratifying experience!
We began by
showing our friends the basics-navigating the supermarket, how to
prepare for the job market, how to apply for a credit card, etc.
In just a few short months our friends moved rapidly from inexperienced
newcomers to employed professionals. Over the years we have remained
friends and have enjoyed many special times together.
Since that experience
as a host family, I have assisted many new Americans in writing
resumes and searching for jobs in the computer industry. For almost
nine years, I have been meeting and working with dozens of educated
and determined individuals. I have been greatly impressed with their
capacity to learn the ropes and to accept the challenges of pursuing
their first job in the U.S. I have found this work rewarding in
so many ways and while I have helped these people
in achieving their goals, I feel I have personally gained far more
than I have given. I look forward to continuing to help other new
Americans in the future.
