ESOL Tutor
by Diane Harris
Of
the various and sundry volunteer experiences I've had over the years,
teaching English as a Second Language to people from the former
Soviet Union has been the most gratifying of all. I am tutoring
a group of five in an apartment in West Hartford on a weekly basis.
The satisfaction I derive from hearing them repeat concepts and
vocabulary from the previous week is without equal. These adult
students are as eager to learn English as I am to teach it. On the
occasional canceled session, I miss my new friends. They feel like
part of my family and familial feelings run deep.
In ten short
months, my students have made amazing progress in their speaking
abilities. There can be no greater joy than knowing that I can help
make their Americanization process a success. I truly feel blessed
to be part of their learning experiences, as well as their lives.
I plan on volunteering
and mentoring for many years. I know I've finally landed my dream
job.
