Jasmine Introduction

Jasmine is considered to be the finest of all essential oils. Jasmine is an evergreen shrub or vine that grows up to 35 feet. It has delicate bright green leaves and star shaped flowers that bloom at night. In Egypt, the flowers are gathered after dark because of their increased aroma. The flowers are then soaked in oil for days, then extracted leaving behind the deep, full aroma of Jasmine. Jasmine is used widely in perfumes and fragrances. It is said to have wonderful positive effects on menstrual pains and cramps.

Jasmine Aromatherapy Use

The essential oil is very costly, of which the French oil is the most expensive, because of the enormous quantity of flowers needed to produce a relatively small amount of oil. The labor costs are also pushed up because the flowers are gathered at night. Remember that "bargains" in Jasmine oil should be questioned by knowledgeable therapists.

Emotionally Jasmine relaxes, soothes, uplifts and helps self confidence. Good for stress and general anxiety. Jasmine essential oil is wonderful for skin care, especially hot, dry and sensitive skins. It will help relieve redness and itching. It is useful in treating dermatitis and is known for its sensual properties and reputedly an Aphrodisiac. Jasmine only needs to be used in very small quantities. It has been said that it makes an exquisite perfume. Jasmine is valuable in childbirth, as it relieves the pain and helps strengthen contractions when massaged into the lower back.

Jasmine Precautions

Jasmine should NEVER be used during pregnancy because of its antispasmodic properties, but it can be used when women are ready to deliver by rubbing the massage oil blend on the lower back, it stimulates contractions. It shouls also never be used directly on the skin. The oil should first be blended with a carrier oil (candles, specially blended massage and bath oils, bath products etc... are considered diluted). Jasmine is generally agreeable with most, but some allergic reactions can occur. Some subjects who were contact sensitive to cinnamic aldehyde (cinnamon) produced positive patch tests to Jasmine absolute. May cause skin irritation so please use on a test patch before hand. Be careful when using for babies, children and the elderly with consulting your physician.

With all essential oils, never use on or around newborns, if you are breastfeeding, have a breathing problem, taking medications, on a strict medical treatment plan by your doctor for an ongoing medical condition, consult your physician.
