Lavender Introduction
Lavender is native to the mountainous zones of the Mediterranean where it grows in sunny, stony habitats, and it is now grown throughout
southern Europe and the United States. Lavender is a heavily branched short shrub that grows to a height of 3 and a half feet. Its broad
rootstock bears woody branches with erect, rod-like, leafy, green shoots. A silvery down covers the gray-green narrow leaves, which are
oblong and tapered, attached directly at the base, and curled spirally. Lavender essential oil comes from the plant's small, blue-violet
flowers. The flowers are arranged in spirals of 6 to 10 blossoms, forming interrupted spikes above the foliage.
The ancient Romans used it as a bath time cleanser to speed up healing. Lavender is probably the most useful, versatile and popular
essential oil. It is a powerful antiseptic and healer. Lavender calms, refreshes, invigorates and lifts the spirits. A very safe essential
oil, and it can be used in many ways. It is excellent for tiredness, tension and depression, and because it is so gentle, it may be
applied undiluted to burns, bites, and used during pregnancy (should not be used during early stages of pregnancy). Lavender enhances
the musculoskeletal, digestive, circulatory and immune systems. It is also a support against muscular aches and pains, and abdominal cramps
associated with pre-menstrual syndrome. It also maintains healthy skin.
When diffused, Lavender's clean scent soothes emotional extremes, and when massaged into the temples and neck, eases headaches, promotes
feelings of calmness and relaxation. Colic, cramps, and nausea respond to a gentle abdominal massage of Lavender. A drop or two of
Lavender on the pillow helps promote restful sleep.
