 Belmopan

Belmopan, the Nation's Capital was re-established in the Cayo District following devastation to the former capitol, Belize City, by Hurricane Hattie in 1965. Belmopan is located approximately 50 miles southwest of Belize City and 20 miles east of San Ignacio.

You really can't say much about Belmopan. It's the capital and it's on the way to San Ignacio. The government offices are there and so is the university. You can drive around the city in about 7-10 minutes depending on how many times you must stop with someone crossing the street.

Government Building

Belmopan

A population of only 6,000 makes Belmopan the smallest capital in the world, which makes everything close at hand. You can walk from your hotel to the government buildings in a matter of minutes. If you prefer a taxi, it's $US 2.50 to anywhere in town.

Visitor Information

Belmopan ~ Places To Stay

The Bull Frog Inn
The Bull Frog Inn is highly recommend if you don't have a budget. At least get there for lunch or dinner. It's wonderful. Might be slow for breakfast and you may not get a menu. On my last visit the menus were locked up behind the bar.
The Circle A Hotel Next door to the Bull Frog is a somewhat tidy and cheaper place to stay, Circle A Hotel. But don't go out too late at night, because they lock the gate and you've got to do some pleading to get let back in.

There is also a nice Chinese restaurant, if only I could remember the name. I do remember they only sell the Premium Belikin and the plates of food are generous.

Getting There . . .

Vehicle

Z-line and James buses depart Belize City at the Pound Yard.
