 Going to Belize?

Tell your friends you're going to belize and you'll probably see both recongnition and puzzlement in their eyes . They've heard of it, but they can't quite place it...

This English-speaking country on the eastern shore of the Yucatan Peninsula owes its obscurity in part to a name change (from British Hondours in 1973) and youth (indepence came in 1981, though belize remains in the Commonwealth). And, too, because its politics leans towards a kind of benign, post colonial, democratic not the head-line making upheavels of some of its Central American neighbors.

District MapMap of Belize

Belize has been "discovered" lately by ecotourists- adventure travelers who strive to appreciate rare environments and local cultures without damaging either. The nation, about the size of Maryland, has a knack for creating nature preserves to attract such guests. Coral reefs, rain forests, endangered species, and Mayan ruins are vigorously preserved in this English-speaking land.

The tropcial moist forest encompasses essentally the same rich flora and fauna as they did some 1,100 years ago. Towering figs, cedars, and mahoganies support thick lians and lush growths of epiphytes. Allspice, gumbo-limbo, rubber trees, diverse palms colerful heliconia and countless species beyond most identification grow in the open understory typical of a mature forest.

Parts of the interior are covered by near-prisitne tropical forests, home to still healty populations of native animals. The Mountain Pine Ridge, a Central highland offers waterfalls, caves and rocky rivers.

Jaguars roan unhunted in Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Preserve. Black howler monkeys swing in trees at Community Baboon Sanctuary. Jabiru storks with 12-foot wingspans wade lagoons at Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary. Hol Chain Marine Preserve covers part of the world's second-longest barrier reef, a ridge of coral hugging the 175-mile coast. The Belize Zoo's native species include the seemingly part cow, part anteater, tapir. There's even a Butterfly Breeding Center.

Bound for Belize?

Getting There . . .

American, Continental, and Taca International fly to Belize city from Houston, New Orleans, and Miami in 1 1/2- 2 hours. Once in the county, I recommend Tropic Air that leapfrogs down the coast to several destinations.

Belize basics . . .

US citizens need a valid passport to enter. One US dollar equals two Belize dollars. English is the official language, but listen for Creole, Spanish, Maya, Garifuna, and other tongues.
