Sarah's Story

My husband Mike and I were married in August 1984.  We decided to not to try to have a child right away.  After about 4 years we decided it was time to start a family.  We tried for about 6 years to get pregnant, but were not successful.  About 3 years into trying to  have a child, we had the opportunity to take in a foster child.  The child was a boy I had worked with years before when I worked at the elementary school with deaf kids.  We took Gustavo into our home in 1992, he was 10 yrs old.  He became part of our family and we love him very much.  We continued to try to have a child of our own for about 2 more years.  We had almost given up on being able to have children.  We had been trying for almost 6 years.  I had just left it in Gods hands to deal with.

In November of 1994, I thought I might be pregnant.  I had been having different pregnancy symptoms, but having never been pregnant before I just thought maybe I had some kind of serious medical condition.  I never even suspected I was pregnant.  We had tried for so long with no positive results, I just never thought it would happen, it was the farthest thing from my mind.  I was very busy and active with Gustavo, working, home and social life, that I wasn't even thinking in that direction.  We were going through some stressful times and I thought maybe my symptoms were just from the stress.  Finally, one day in the beginning of November, I put on a shirt that was sort of clingy and noticed my stomach looked pregnant.  Then I started putting things together in my mind and realized I might be pregnant.  I told Mike we needed to get a home pregnancy test, but if I wasn't pregnant, then I didn't want to go to the doctor until after the new year when some of our stress would be over.  We got the test, really doubting that I was pregnant.  It came out positive!! We were so excited and scared.  We knew I was along in the pregnancy, but not sure how far.  I went to my general doctor to confirm that I was pregnant (that is the rules of our insurance,  ughh!!)  The doctor confirmed I was pregnant and estimated I was maybe 4 or 5 months along.  He gave me an emergency referral for the OB/GYN doctor, but thier rules were that I must go to a nutrition class before seeing the doctor.  So I was scheduled for that the next week and to see the doctor the week after that.  At first I accepted that, but then really wanted to know how far along I was and that all was ok, so I called them and explained the situation and they agreed to let me come in on Monday for an ultrasound to see how far I was.  That was one of the longest weekends I have ever had.  On Monday, Mike and I went for the utlrasound.  When they did the ultrasound, they were shocked and said I was full term!  Good thing I was already lying down and Mike was sitting.  We were shocked, excited, scared, and almost every other emotion you can have.  The actual doctor came in and did an exam and said we should go that day and register at the hospital and all that.  He said all was fine.  I went back to see him on Thursday and all was still fine.  He suggested we induce so that the delivery would be more controlled, as we didn't know if she was over due or anything like that.  I was already dilated a little and a bit efaced, so we agreed.  We went in on Saturday, November 12, 1994.  Everything went fine.  I was in labor about 7 hours and then Sarah was born.  She was perfect.  All was fine. Later that night they realized she was having spells of not getting enough oxygen into her blood, so she was taken to NICU.  She had to stay there 4 days and do tests and all, but they never found out why she had that problem a few times.  All the tests came back fine and she never had the problem  after the first day and a half.  We were so glad we finally got to bring her home.  We continued watching her grow and enjoying her for almost 3 years.  She was truly a miracle girl.
