| Volume I The series opens with 13-year-old Yang Guo being accompanied by the legendary hero, Guo Jing to Zhong Nan Mountain to learn under the Taoist disciples of his former teacher, Master Qui of All True |
| Sect Kung Fu (Quan Zhen). Guo Jing is the sworn brother of Yang Guo's father, the slain fighter Yang Kang and as such, he takes it upon himself to raise the boy into an upright young man who shares his kung fu ideals. When his wife, Huang Rong, the leader of Northern Beggar Sect Kung Fu, refuses to teach the orphaned boy, Guo Jing brings him to his old school in Chong Yang Palace. After experiencing a harsh childhood at the hands of the two-faced Taoists, Yang Guo is forced to leave the temple and make it on his own. In his wanderings, the intelligent and highly spirited young man meets many interesting characters and learns under several kung fu masters, including the beautiful and mysterious heiress of Ancient Tomb Sect Kung Fu (Gumu Bai), Xiao Long Nuu (Dragon Girl) with whom he shares a love that is forbidden in the wu lin world. Forcefully separated from his love and haunted by the dark shroud of his father's death, Yang Guo embarks on a journey of a lifetime, one that would test his skills, his beliefs, and his love.
