These
are a few dots on the world map that have something to do with my
life so far. So many miles away from each other, but they have things
in common -- like, all these towns (only L.A. qualifies to call itself
a 'city') host a sizable chunk of mossy expatriates, edgy temporary
migrants and fussy tourists; they hold international events; they
are by the sea; and, of course, like I said before, they got something
to do with me. (Isn't it all that matters? No? But I'm only
following the 2003 year-old homocentricism!)
Anyway,
I even leave my seat to look out of the windows; would you?

Mount
Merapi -- an active volcano -- is Yogya, Java, Indonesia,
so to speak; although this mountain breaks household equipments
worse than my platoon of cats.
Minor,
medium, major earthquakes; green fields, hikers, and the mystic;
pyroclasts, steamy clouds, heartbreak; inspiration, perspiration,
accomodation -- an intimidating scenery, but the abbreviation
of it is beauty.

The
only one entry on this page of a place that excels in artificial
flavor, Los Angeles, California, the U.S. of A, nonetheless
still retains little bits of charm it once had. It all depends
to a large part on what one seeks there -- if just for a slapdash
encounter with the glittering, that is what you'd get;
if it is for something else, you'd find it somewhere among the
crevices.
To
dream cheap dream is permissible only in spots like this one;
chances and pitfalls, progress and setbacks keep between themselves
a blurry divisive line.

There
is, at least until the second I upload this pic, no snapshot
of Kiel this pretty. You could catch a thin glimpse of the canal
at the forefront, like silky film caressing the northernmost
territory of the proud Deutschland.
It
even looks like unreal; do people live in those tiny
red houses? People, which means daily garbage, periodic
domestic meltdown, acute cloggy management, tactless guests
and headaching neighbors? For a while, welcome to dreamland
with a dreamcast -- namely none.

A
very actual window in the factual town of Largs, Scotland, United
Kingdom; you could see the cold breeze that promises
a lot more of rain there in the encroaching fog temporarily
veiled above the hilltops.
Like
every old town in the ancient Europe, this one, too, seems to
have no time and place for anything new -- but because
of that, it could give back the things we long for that we never
even had.

KIND OF HISTORICAL SORT OF POSTSCRIPT |

During
the internetless refrigerated period of human history known
as 'the Ice Age', the places paraded on the above have already
existed although in no recognizable makeup. This was the time
of hard work, gnashed teeth and severe want of vodka. The poor
forepeople of Yogya, Los Angeles, Kiel and Largs alike spent
most of their time trying to figure out how to survive the day,
how to entice huge predators to visit a neighbor instead, and
how to make ice cream.
Then
came the last tens of thousands of years when the ice-cap which
covered United Kingdom melted away, and the climate there became
as melty as today. It is perfect for breeding horses, gossips,
and football injuries.

Modern
man, or what archaeologists call 'Homo sapiens', a.k.a 'sophisticated
primate with large brain', is known to have existed in Western
Europe including Largs and Kiel during the last 30,000 years,
although the same archaeologists also have found ample evidence
to the contrary as late as 7 A.M. this morning, when they witnessed
multiple car crash at the Autobahn on their way to work, caused
by one Mrs. Charlotte Kieler, who apparently drove all the way
with the gas tank open and dripping, and dragging the entire
gas pump with her to Amsterdam.
She
claimed innocence and that she was in a hurry to catch an international
plane, but cops detained her luggage nonetheless.
Latest
reports said that Mrs. Kieler sued the Royal Dutch Customs for
constant misspelling of her name.

In
the likes of British Museum, where you could waste some weekend
in to browse the wonderful artefacts of your ancestors, thousands-of-years-old
debris would testify of the long history every town must endure.
The archaelogical evidence of life in the pioneering forms,
like chipping flint nodules, are the base on which today's civilization
was built. However, this evidence has never been found in Los
Angeles, California, USA, because they used Zippo.
|
|
Changes
of climate in the ancient days have given some groups of people
perfect conditions for survival, while the rest of them perished.
It allowed the population to increase somewhat; the people of
Yogya, Indonesia, still try every way to cope with it today.
Dinner
leftovers, broken household implements and such things that
your forepersons dubbed 'possessions' later became sealed in
what they called 'real estate' by layers of stalagmite, which
has preserved a good many objects that would otherwise have
decayed and turned into nix. This is why we still have Naziism
today.
|
|
Cultures
evolved a long way after the 'Ice Age', and so we have Yogya,
Los Angeles, Kiel and Largs today looking like what they are.
It has by no means been a painful evolutionary process.
Evolution
leaves nobody out, so we will surely improve even more in days
to come.
Look,
even John McIntosh of Georgia, USA, was finally able to produce
these windchimes after trying it since the Johnson administration. |
