A Brief Introduction
![]() |
Gene Starwind (age 20) and Jim Hawking (11) are your basic Jacks-of-All-Trades living on Centinel III. Their business, Starwind and Hawking Enterprises ("We fix everything from tractors to relationships"), isn't exactly booming. Desperate for money they accept a job from a woman who turns out to be an outlaw named Hilda, on the run from some VERY nasty Kei Pirates because she stole their cutting-edge ship, the XGP16AII, and its navigator, a bio-android girl named Melfina, the only being capable of guiding the XGP to the Galactic Leyline (which is basically the ultimate wishing well). Through a series of unfortunate circumstances, Hilda joins the Choir Invisible, and Gene is left with the maintenance of the XGP (which he renames the Outlaw Star) and the care of Melfina. Eventually he acquires some interesting shipmates, like Aisha ClanClan, a Ctarl-Ctarl (a race of beings that can metamorph into big cats--Aisha turns into a white tiger when sufficiently provoked), and Suzuka, an unbeatable assassin. He also makes lots of new enemies, like the pirates, and meets up with old ones, like the MacDougall brothers, who are responsible for his status as an orphan. Eventually Gene decides that the only way to get away from these guys is to look for the Galactic Leyline... but that, not surprisingly, proves difficult.

Twilight Suzuka
Melfina
Gene Starwind
Gene Starwind leaps before he looks, trusting on his luck to land him on stable ground. Gene has a violent dislike for Space, because when he was younger some pirates attacked Gene's father's ship, resulting in Gene's dying father throwing Gene into an escape pod to save him. Imagine Gene's reaction then when he comes across the people responsible for the attack on his father! Alright, so Gene hates Space and pirates. What does he like? Women. He's a real playboy (or, if you prefer Jim's description, he's "dirty, slimy and scummy"). Imagine his surprise when he falls in love with quiet, shy Melfina.
The Cast
Jim Hawking
Jim Hawking is the responsible one, the brains of the operation. Although it is never specifically addressed, Jim is most likely an orphan too. (He does at one point say Melfina reminds him of his mom, and why else would he be hanging around with Gene?) Jim is a brilliant hacker kid, and though he has a tendency to yell when a whisper would suffice, he's not NEARLY as irritating as Cowboy Bebop's Ed (see my Cowboy Bebop page if you need this comment explained). Jim provides a nice foil for Gene, and he also provides a commentary on their situation, and the various characters' actions.
Melfina
Melfina is a bio-android, and a mystery even to herself. Melfina knows nothing of her existence before the moment she finds herself standing naked before Gene after stepping out of Hilda's cozy briefcase. Though she doesn't know it until the end of the series, Melfina was never supposed to function as an actual person. Buty despite the fact that she was created to be a mere puppet, Melfina is a person in her own right. Melfina is in love with Gene, a surrogate mother to Jim, friend to Aisha and Suzuka, and the object of Harry MacDougall's twisted desire. In the words of Jim to Gene, "So how human is she? Mel's more human than you are."
Twilight Suzuka is an Ultra Class-A assassin. She first appears when she tries to kill Fred Luo. Luckily for Fred, Gene happened to walk in before she could. Gene later tricks her into agreeing to go after Gene before Fred (therefore allowing Gene to only worry about himself, which is what he's best at). Suzuka doesn't kill Gene (obviously), but rather joins him once she learns he's opposed to the Kei pirates, whom she has a personal vendetta against, thanks to the fact that one of them killed her whole family.
Twilight Suzuka
Aisha ClanClan
Aisha ClanClan is an ex-officer of the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire. She lost her position when she let Hilda escape, because the Ctarl-Ctarl, like everybody else, are after the Galactic Leyline. Aisha possesses a great deal of brute strength. Although Aisha tries at first to beat the Leyline's coordinates out of Gene, eventually she too joins the crew. It turns out she's also been informing the Ctarl-Ctarl empire of their progress, but her real loyalty proves to lie with her new friends and not the Empire (which is good, as the Empire left her to rot).
Hot Ice Hilda
Hilda is the one responsible for the mess Gene et al find themselves in, because she decided to swipe the XGP and Melfina from the Kei Pirates in the first place. It's never really explained how she accomplished this, since the Pirate Guild is VERY powerful, and the Spcae Forces were in on it too...but the results are that she meets an untimely demise, and Gene is left with a ship and an android that he knows nothing about. Hilda is one tough cookie. Her last words are "Outlaws never go down easy, no matter what happens."
Gilliam II
Gilliam II is the Outlaw Star's know-it-all main computer, in charge of everything but navigation, which Melfina handles. There are lots of Mini-Gilliams (like the one pictured here) who travel around the ship on little rails, doing repairs and nagging Gene, mostly. They are portable, which allows the crew to keep up a direct link with the ship at all times. To begin with they were all blue, but Jim decided to paint one pink, much to Gene's amusement..
Fred Luo
Fred Luo likes Gene (and Jim, which disturbs me because he's only a child) a LOT. Fred doesn't seem too thrilled about Melfina... maybe he doesn't like the competition. Fred is the "broker" (read: Loan Shark) Gene turns to whenever he needs money--which is frequent. Fred generally gives Gene the parts or money he needs in exchange for odd jobs, like getting Suzuka not to kill Fred, or for promoting Fred at the Space Race, or stopping Fred's fiancee from marrying him...
Kei Pirates
The Kei Pirates were the original owners of Melfina and the XGP and they want them back. The Kei Pirates use Tao magic, which can only be countered by more magic (like Gene's Caster Gun). The most powerful are the Anten 7 and Lord Hazanka--the most deadly of them all. The pirates are everywhere... on space stations waiting to ambush Gene (or fall in love with Jim), at Hot Springs getting bowled over by snowballs... and of course, lurking at the Galactic Leyline.

Ron MacDougall
Harry MacDougall
Harry MacDougall is very scary because he's unpredictable. He likes Melfina--claims to love her--but he's also violent. He has a prosthetic arm, and claims to be a test-tube baby, and because of either (or both) of these things, he is capable of contacting Melfina when she is hooked up to the ship. Harry dies at the Leyline, after helping Gene get to Melfina, making at least his end noble.
Ron MacDougall has no redeeming qualities. Although he claims to love his brother, he makes the comment at one point that he didn't go to so much trouble "just to save Harry." The eldest MacDougall brother, Ron was a part of the attack on Gene's father... and a major player in Hilda's death as well. Ron also dies at the Leyline, at Gene's hand.
