Pocket Bishonen... Gotta Glomp 'em All!

Many anime fans will need no explanation for this page. To these fans I extend an invitation to skip this explanatory text and just peruse my collection of Bishonen. It's coming along nicely, ne?

To those who find themselves saying "what's bishonen mean? And why does that logo look familiar? Why do I suddenly see an annoying little yellow raccoon creature with a limited vocabulary?" and perhaps particularly to those of you who have come from any of my non-anime pages, an explanation is probably necessary. Don't feel bad--I had no idea what a Bishonen was until recently myself.

"Bishonen" (or "Bishounen") is Japanese and basically means "beautiful guys." Originally it was used only to apply to the beautiful young men (you know, the boys who look like pretty girls in anime) generally in homoerotic manga (comic books), but somewhere along the way the term got broadened to include any anime guy people found attractive, and it has now been extended to include non-anime males as well (there are 11 on this page)! As for the "glomp" in "Gotta glomp 'em all," glomping is sort of like throwing yourself at someone and clinging onto them. (Anime girls glomp a LOT.) So much for the definitions. Now what's up with this page?!

SO glad you asked! By now you've probably guessed that this Bishonen thing is a Pokemon parody (and if you didn't guess that, I just told you). As it says at the Bishonen-catching headquarters, the premise of the Pocket Bishonen thing is that people LOVE bishounen, and some people are addicted to Pokemon, and the natural result of this combination is Pocket Bishonen!

Now, you don't have to love, or like, or even understand Pokemon to be able to catch Bishonen (I know I don't fit in ANY of those categories). I personally HATE Pokemon. But I like cute guys, and that's the number 1 requirement for catching Pocket Bishonen. The second is that you know something about your target character's world/history, or you have a good deal of patience, because in order to "catch" these bishies, you have to correctly answer 3 questions about them. A number of the Bishies below were caught with the patience method, because I've only seen Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop and Princess Mononoke, and read Harry Potter, in their entirety (and the anime I saw dubbed, and some cases, such as Princess Mononoke, the dub/sub issue does become important). The other shows I either have limited exposure to, or in some cases absolutely none at all, except for the knowlege that the target Bishies were cute and therefore worth the effort of systematically eliminating the incorrect answers.

I next had to decide how to logically categorize the Bishonen I caught. Originally I was going to group them by show (logical enough), but decided against it, because many of these Bishies are rivals, and it wouldn't be a good idea to leave them together. What good's a lair full of lovelies if they're always killing each other off and forcing you to restock your supply? So instead I decided to separate the "bad" guys from the "good" guys (when I knew which category to put them in anyway), and put the ones who I either didn't know, or who never seemed to make up their minds themselves, in a separate category. Once I had them broken down into those major categories, I put them in order according to my personal preference! How's that for logical? ;)

Sigh. I wonder if the Crocodile Hunter would be interested in my Bishonen-hunting tales.... nah.

In any case, below I'll indicate any Bishies I had trouble with, as well as give a little blurb about each subject. And now that I've rambled on for ages, on to the Bishonen!

The Good Bishonen

1. Inuyasha (Inu-Yasha), is a two-for-one deal! Yay! He's a half-demon, meaning that most of the time he's got silver hair and cute widdle dog ears, and a big chip on his shoulder. But on the new moon he becomes completely human, and NICE. Scary. O.o Inuyasha (either form) is tied with Wolfwood for my favorite Bishie.

2. Nicholas D. Wolfwood (Trigun). Mmm. Just my type: tall, dark and tortured. Maybe I should have put him in the "Undecided" section, but whatever. Love that gun-toting preacher. He would have died of lung cancer though, if he hadn't been shot.

5. Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop). Spike's got a dark past and he's kinda melancholy and secretive, but he's got his heart in the right place (even though he used to be a ruthless assassin for the Red Dragons), and definitely one of the good guys. Spike kicks ass. No trouble getting him either.

4. Gene Starwind (Outlaw Star) was the first Bishonen I caught, and I had NO trouble getting him, if you know what I mean. (I answered all 3 questions right on the first try... what were YOU thinking?) ;)

3. Vash the Stampede, from Trigun, is just so darn glompable. You've just GOT to love an ace gunman who refuses to kill anyone and is obsessed with donuts and "LOVE and PEACE!"! Oh yeah, and he's CUTE.

6. Miroku (Inu-Yasha) is one big pervert. But I like him anyway. ^_^ He's a monk bent on destroying the demon Naraku... and asking every beautiful woman he meets if she'll bear his child. *sigh* Baka.

7. Next in line is Zelgadis Greywords (Slayers), another mopey guy. Zel is part human, part Golem and part demon... and then his grandfather/great-grandfather (yes, he's both at once, don't ask, I haven't seen many episodes, so I don't know) turns him into this stone chimera being! I don't know much about Zelgadis, and it showed--I had to play the guessing game to catch him!

8. Gourry Gabriev (Slayers). Gourry, unlike most of the other Bishonen on this page, is simply chipper (despite the moody blue tones in this pic)--somewhat simple-minded too. He's a big, dumb blond. :) He's not the brightest crayon in the box, but he's loyal and brave and every bit the sincere hero. No trouble with Jellyfish-brain (his nickname) either.

9. Bill Weasley is from the Harry Potter books, despite his anime-image here. Bill, the oldest Weasley boy, hasn't been in the books much so far, but we're told he's super-cool and cute--and he's a Weasley, which as far as I'm concerned makes him WONDERFUL! Had no trouble with him either, but as I have my own HP page, that's not surprising.

10. Remus Lupin is another Harry Potter character, Harry's teacher in Book 3, and also a friend of Harry's parents from school. Remus is just awesome. He's also a werewolf, which means SOME wizards *cough! Snape! cough!* treat him badly, and eventually force him to RESIGN because they spread a panic! (No, I'm not bitter, why do you ask?!) Had no trouble rescuing poor Remus from poverty to live in luxury in my Lair. ;)

11. Van Fanel is from Vision of Escaflowne. He's a cutie-pie good guy (though he does tend to brood a bit), who can sprout wings and magically regrow his tee-shirt afterwards. The wings are because he's a Draconian, a descendent of Atlantis. The tee shirt has no explanation.

12. Allen Schezar is also from Escaflowne. Allen is a knight; a gallant swordsman, well-mannered, loyal, faitful, all that good stuff. Doesn't stop his King for throwing him in jail at the drop of hat when the bad guys spread lies about Allen though. Nice.

13. Fujisawa (El Hazard) I caught because he's funny. What a drinker. Just the sort of crazy party guy a virtual male harem could use! I lured him into the trap with a bottle of beer and a pack of cigarettes. ;)

14. Ken Hidaka (Weiss Kreuz) is your typical ex-athlete-turned-assassin. Framed for fixing a soccer game in his youth, Ken mistakenly thought his best friend, Kase, was killed when the two tried to find out what really happened. Ken joined Weiss, a group of "good" assassins, to avenge Kase, only to discover later that he was behind it all along.

15. Omi Tsukiyono (Weiss Kreuz) is your typical abducted-child-loses-memory-and-gets-recruited-for-assassin-group-by-man-he-thinks-is-his-uncle-but-is-in-fact-his-real-father. Somehow Omi manages to remain cheerful (and surprisingly sane), AND even manages to balance his Weiss career with not only the standard cover-up part-time florist job like the other guys, but also his schoolwork. Wow.

16. Aya Fujimiya (Weiss Kreuz) is your typical man-out-to-avenge-his-comatose-sister. His real name is Ran, but he took his sister's name when she went into a coma after a car "accident." He also took his sister's earring at this time. Why not. It looks better on him anyway. The frown also looks good on him.

17. Yohji Kudoh (Weiss Kreuz) is your typical private investigator-turned-assassin. He joined Weiss when his partner, Asuka, was killed during a routine investigation. Of course later he learns she wasn't killed, she was just turned into a rival assassin. Of course, he kills her. But, uh, he feels badly about it. O.o;

19. Fred (Outlaw Star) is a loan shark. He always loans Gene the money or gets him the weapons he needs... but at a price. Such as having to dress up as a woman to enter a fight to make sure Fred's fiancee doesn't win. ^_^;

18. Kenshin (Rurouni Kenshin) is a samurai; the infamous "manslayer." Unfortunately, I haven't seen the show so I don't know much about him. I just know he's cute, and that he's learned the error of his ways and won't kill anymore. O.o;

20. Jim Hawking (Outlaw Star) is Gene's business partner. He's also 11, and at least 30 years more mature than Gene.

22. Ranma (Ranma 1/2) fell in the cursed Jusenkyo springs... and now he turns into a girl whenever he gets hit with cold water! It's amazing how often that can happen in a day...

21. Dr. Tofu (Ranma 1/2) is an accomplished martial artist as well as a good doctor... unless the woman he loves, Kasumi Tendou, is around, that is, and then he's a pathetic spaz!

23. Ryouga (Ranma 1/2) also fell in the cursed Jusenkyo springs while he was chasing Ranma around China, trying to finish a duel with him, and like Ranma cold water transforms him... into a piglet! Ryouga hates Ranma... but he loves Ranma's fiancee!

24. Kouga* (Inu-Yasha) is a wolf demon. He hates Inuyasha, but he loves Inuyasha's girlfriend, Kagome! (*any similarities between Kouga and Ryouga are pure circumstance. The fact that both characters look, behave and work the same way in their respective Rumiko Takahashi stories means nothing.)

25. Hojou (Inu-Yasha) is the sweetest guy... he's always giving Kagome, the main character, country-medicine cures for her "ailments" (which are all made up to excuse her absence from school). Too bad she's lin love with Inuyasha!

These last Bishonen in the "Good" category I have set off because a) they're all from the same movie, Fellowship of the Ring, and b) I made these pics myself, and did not get them from the Pocket Bishonen HQ. Which is why they're not quite as good as the others, as my "graphics" program consists of arranging jpeg files and word art in microsoft word, and then pasting that into microsoft paint (the lame one that comes with the computer), and then cropping the pictures and resizing them with irfanview. It works, but it's not great.

2. Legolas is the Elf representative in the Fellowship. He's equally good with the bow and the knife, and he is PRETTY. But then, that's what Elves are. Go, Elves!

3. Pippin Took is actually my second favorite character. What can I say, I'm a fan of the hobbits. Pippin is the youngest member of the group and it shows. He's a bit clumsy and does some pretty stupid things. But he's SO cute. And he does grow out of it; it's a good thing they brought him, in the end.

1. Frodo Baggins is the unlucky little hobbit who has to take the evil One Ring all across Middle Earth to throw it back into the volcano where it was made. He's my favorite character from the story (and it certainly didn't hurt for him to be played by Elijah Wood--cute, cute, cute).

5. You have to like Aragorn (known to the hobbits as Strider). He's just plain cool. He's the fated True King as well as being a grizzled warrior. Best of both worlds.

4. Merry Brandybuck is another hobbit. He's a bit older and wiser than Pippin, but Elrond wants to send him and Pippin back home because they are too young, but they won't have it. Like Pippin, it's a good thing Merry goes with them.

6. Samwise Gamgee (hobbit) is Frodo's servant, and he is fiercely loyal to him. Sam ends up being PIVOTAL to the mission, so he deserves much respect. SAM is the smallest person who changes the world, not Frodo.

The Unknown/Undecided Bishonen

2. Severus Snape is the slimy Potions teacher from Harry Potter. Now, I know what you're thinking. "Snape's one of the good guys!" You're right, he is. But he acts like SUCH a bastard, here's where he stays. If he ever behaves himself, I'll consider moving him. Maybe.

1. Xelloss (Slayers) is the Trickster Priest. As this might suggest, he's on HIS side, not good or bad's. I've never seen him in an episode either, but from other sources I know he seems to help out the heroes more than the bad guys, but he seems mostly to do whatever is in his own best interest--which appears to be "run away!". The first time I ever saw this guy in a music vid ("It's not easy being evil" sung by Zorak), I thought he was a girl! Guess that alone qualifies him for Bishonen status!

3. Sesshoumaru (Inu-Yasha) is Inuyasha's older, full-demon brother. He spends most of his time trying to kill Inuyasha for his sword. You may be saying, "he's a bad bishonen! What's he doing here?!" Well, he'd like you to THINK he's bad. But underneath that pretty boa and that spiky armor, Sesshoumaru has a heart beating in that breast. He saves and essentially adopts a human girl named Rin, despite the fact that he CLAIMS to hate humans. See? He's not all bad. Hence, Undecided.

5. Harry MacDougall (Outlaw Star) is another Undecided. He loves Melfina, but shows his affection in strange ways, like attacking her with the roses he brought her. Harry also HATES Gene (because Melfina's in love with Gene basically). Harry eventually comes down on the side of good, but it's only like 5 seconds before he dies. Therefore I didn't put him with the good guys, because he did more bad than good (and I didn't want him to bother my Gene either). But because he did eventually go Good, it saved him from landing in the next category...

4. Folken (Vision of Escaflowne) is Van's older brother. He joined Zaibach (the bad guys) when his kingmaking ceremony took a wrong turn when the dragon bit off his arm. Folken realizes that Emperor Dornkirk's a madman, and he turns against him... but it costs him his pretty life.

6. Boromir is also part of the Fellowship of the Ring, but he's a bit shady. Can't quite control his desire for the One Ring, and tries to take it from Frodo. Dies protecting Pippin and Merry, but still...

The Bad Bishonen

1. Millions Knives, from Trigun, is Vash's evil twin. No, really. He is. He's intent on eliminating the human race, and making Vash's life Hell. Nice guy. I know it would go against everything that Vash is, but I wish he'd killed Knives. I wish SOMEBODY had anyway. Don't care who, really.
I'm not bitter, just because it's ultimately Knives' fault my Wolfwood was MURDERED, no... not bitter at all...

2/3. Rezo the Red Priest (Slayers) is something of a mystery to me. I know he's been blind since birth, and he's evil. While trying to cure his blindness, he resurrects the Dark Lord Shabranigdo. He also turned his poor grandson/great-grandson into Stone-boy, so even if Rezo WASN'T trying to destroy the world, he'd still be bad! I know even less about Kopii Rezo, who is, as his name suggests, a copy of Rezo. Had some trouble catching these fellas, as I know so little about them--especially Kopii! All I know is that the two apparently have slightly different personalities, and Kopii can see. I decided Rezo and his xeroxed buddy needed punishing for being jerks (especially to Zelgadis, poor guy), so I decided to lock 'em up with Knives and Vicious--fate worse than death if you ask me.

4. Vicious (Cowboy Bebop), in case his name isn't enough, is one nasty piece of work. You can't see his eyes becuase of the logo, but be happy about that. They're scary. Vicious is a bloodthirsty animal--has no problem biting the hand that feeds him--and seems to have the uncontrollable urge to kill Spike every time the two meet, despite the fact that they were once best friends. So I nabbed him (no troubles, despite his evil nature) and locked him up with Knives and the Rezo twins. Kill my Spike, will you? I'll show YOU!...

5. Naraku (Inu-Yasha) is probably the biggest bastard of them all. Once a common thief, he traded his soul for a demon horde's powers. Turns out all the slaughter and mayhem of Japan's Feudal Age were this jerk's fault. He especially likes to cause Inuyasha pain, and is after the Shikon jewel to make his power absolute.

And the Freakiest Catch of Them All...

Isn't Jareth (Labyrinth) a bad guy? Yes, he is. But more than that, he's just plain FREAKY! I mean, David Bowie's scary enough on his own, did they have to give him weird make-up, hair and PANTS too? *Shudder* I caught Jareth (with no problems because I love the film despite Bowie's weirdness) so I could email him to a friend who is likewise traumatized by the unbelievably tight pants they've put him in. I put him all by himself so he wouldn't scare my Bishonen. But once a day I send him into the Bad Bishonen's cell to sing at them in his tight pants. That traumatizing effect may be lost on Rezo though...

Now that you've seen my collection, I'm sure you're itching to catch some yourselves! Unfortunately, the Pocket Bishonen HQ is no more. *sniffle* But you can take any of the Bishies here for your own virtual harem. I don't mind. These are just their clones anyway. I have the originals hidden away somewhere safe where only I can get to them... ;)
