Pokemon Gold &
Silver
Publisher: Nintendo,
Gamefreak
Type: RPG
Release date: Out now!
Cost: Ł30
Pokémon Gold/Silver
games are the true sequels to Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow. There are 100
new Pokémon and all the previous Pokémon have been redrawn with more
colors to take full advantages of gameboy color. Interestingly, the
graphics of the Pokédex are also slightly different between the two
games. You can trade your trained Pokémon from the previous games into
these new ones, but not vice versa. Just like the previous versions, you
need to have both games in order to catch all the new Pokémon. Pokémon
Gold/Silver also utilize a real time system so that the games will run
in a real time mode. What this means is that you have to play the games
at different times of the day in order to catch certain Pokémon because
some only come out in the mornings while others only come out at nights
or during the days. To make things more complicated, certain events only
take place on certain days of the week and some shops only open one day
a week.
Pokémon Gold/Silver will also have a brand new map with new adventures.
When you finished the game (or you thought you did after you got your
eight badges and defeated the Elite Four), the second part of your
journey will begin. You will be given a ticket to ride a boat back to
the so-called old world (the map in Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow). In this
old map, new adventures will take place. At the end of this part of the
game, you will face the Ultimate Pokémon Master: Ash Ketchum.
There are many new features in Pokémon Gold/Silver. For example, you
will be given a Pokegear right at the beginning of the game. This handy
device contains a cellular phone so defeated trainers can call you for a
rematch. You will also get important phone calls, which are crucial for
the game play. A watch and maps can be accessed through this device.
Later on, you will be able to upgrade your Pokegear to have a radio
component. There will be various radio stations at different channels
broadcasting programs such as daily lucky draws, Prof. Oak’s Pokémon
channel, music to wake Snorlax, etc…
There is also great improvement on how you carry items. Your backpack
will now have four compartments to store different kinds of items.
Normal items (such as potions and antidotes) will be stored in your left
pocket, TMs and HMs in your right pocket, Pokéballs in your main pocket
and all important items (such as bike and fishing rods) will be stored
in the back compartment. No more scrolling through a long list to find
the item you want to use.
You may obtain special nuts from the nut trees in these two new games.
If you equip the Pokémon with these nuts, the Pokémon can then use
them to heal/recover themselves during battles. Some of these nuts can
even be used to produce special Pokéballs. Breeding is also possible in
Pokémon Gold/Silver. You can duplicate your favorite Pokémon by
breeding them at the Daycare Center and the baby Pokémon will usually
have better stats than the parents. Some new Pokémon can also be
produced through breeding. For example, if you breed a male Pikachu with
a female Pikachu, you will get a cute little Pichu.
There are also new HMs, TMs, attacks, shops, trainers, types of Pokémon,
forms of evolution…etc, and the list goes on and on. If you like Pokémon
Red/Blue/Yellow, you will love Pokémon Gold/Silver. The only complain I
have on these games are that you are only given one game save slot with
the game cartridge.
