When the branch broke, it sounded like a firecracker. John didn't grab onto his big brother's hand like the story was later told, his brother grabbed his hand as he was falling. He reached out for anything to hold onto, it was a long way to the bottom, he just happened to grab John's hand. The grip wasn't very strong and John almost lost his big bro. He tried to hold on with the other hand, but his hands were too sweaty. He squeezed as hard as he could, but felt his brother slowly slipping out of his reach. He wanted to pull him up, wanted to be superman and he let go because he felt his own branch starting to crack. John watched his brother fall down the tree. He didn't come down to check on his brother when he hit the ground. He was too afraid to get off branch. He was paralyzed with fear. He couldn't move at all. "Please don't let me fall!" John heard his brother scream when he woke up. "Hold on tight!" His brother's voice echoed in his head. Now he was sitting in his bed, safe, sweating. It was all a dream. Just a stupid dream. Maybe he thought, I'm not a coward. He padded down the hall quietly avoiding the squeaky boards. He opened the door and his heart sank. His brother's bed was empty. He was a coward. |
