Rosamond is my home base. I put it in, not for its scenic beauty, but it might be a good rest stop on your way to somewhere else. Perhaps I'm too harsh - the Western Mojave does have its beauty.

You might also want to stop at William J. Fox or Fox Field too. Check out the link for Fox.

Rosamond is straight forward but it does have its moments. The prevailing winds are out of the West and you will be landing runway 25 most of the time. Not seen well in the above picture are the high hills to the immediate left. They are not lighted and could be a real hazard during a night landing. On close final you have to deal with a house and tall trees just a hundred meters or less from the threshold. There is a great Mexican Restaurant on the field and it is located just to the left of the first 50 meters of runway 25. If the winds are strong it is best to land a little long as the restaurant does strange things to the wind and landing past the restaurant will eliminate them.

Do to the hills to the North, all traffic for runway 25 is left. If you are approaching from the South you can use the 14 freeway to line up for your base. This will keep you to the East of the High School and will put you in a good location to turn final. If you enter a left 45 degree you want to either turn base just before or just after the high school. If I'm flying a Cherokee 140 or a Cessna 172 I usually turn just inside the school. A somewhat faster airplane requires you to turn past the school and the freeway can be a good guide. Watch out for the school just West of the airport when you are leaving from runway 25.

Other landmarks to look for are Willow Springs Race Track just a couple miles to the West. Fox Field is easy to pick up too, just 8 miles or less to the South. The FBO on field is A.V. Aviation, you can find most of things you would need there when making a rest stop.
