ML lifting a 'sham'
"The much dramatized lifting of martial law is a sham." This was unanimously expressed by some 500 students who joined the mass assembly and symposium held at the CAS second floor lobby last Jan. 15. Speakers from different sectors within and outside the university denounced the lifting of martial law and described it as "deceptive, and aiming to pacify national unrest by feigning reforms."

Main Lib employee dies from fall

A 40-year-old employee of the Main Library fell from the 3rd floor of the Main Library’s Archives section on January 8 and was declared dead around 9 pm of the same day.

Arnel Zafra, an Archives employee, sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center, police officials said.

The police said that according to the doctor, Zafra was not operated on immediately because of the severity of the injuries he obtained.

Witnesses said they heard a loud thud around 10 am in the library’s north wing, the side facing the College of Engineering building.

It was not clear whether the victim committed suicide or if he accidentally fell, said security guard Rommel Magno. He also said no one was with Zafra in the Archives section when the incident happened.

The victim’s family refused to comment on the incident. # Philippine Collegian

Narra catches fire

The east wing of the Narra Residence Hall was razed down on morning of January 9.

The abandoned men’s dormitory caught fire at around 4 am, which reached 5th alarm according to fire deparment officials.
Firefighters said faulty wiring may have been the cause of the fire as witnesses reportedly saw sparks from inside the building.

The police have yet to determine the fire’s cause as the dormitory has been vacated since October last year due to the structure’s dilapidated condition.

The fire was declared under control around 5 am.# Philippine Collegian
