USA Section A

In this section I have put the photos from the first leg of my travels, down the West Coast of the United States of America, including Los Angeles, although along the way I visited Yosemite National Park, although I have devoted a whole section to that.

This page has sections from Seattle, Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles

Seattle, WA

The first place that we visited was Seattle, in Washington State. After about a four hour bus journey, we arrived in Seattle, and for the first time of what would be many, we headed for the info board in the Greyhound Station to try to find out where to go next. This was quite a daunting thing, because it was the first time that we were in a city not knowing where to go, with our huge backpacks to lug around. We found out where the hostel was, and met up with some other travellers who were also heading to the hostel. It was quite a distance away, so we all got in a taxi and shared the cost. So there we were, at the first American hostel, and we could just dump our bags and go for a wander.

I did think I had more photos than this though!

This was the second place that we spent any real time in, although in Seattle we had no idea that we would end up here. What we planned to do was stay in Portland, OR, so that's where we caught the coach to. However, when we got there, we rang up a few places in the guidebook and found out there was nowhere to stay for the night. We had probably left it a little late, because we didn't pre-book and we arrived at about 8pm. What we decided to do was just move on, although we still didn't know where to. After a consultation of the guidebook and the bus schedule, we decided to go to Sacramento, CA. The next bus was still four hours away, so our only experience of Portland was having a wander in the dark to try to find some food! After a 13 hour (!!) bus journey, we arrived in Sacramento, (luckily there was space at the hostel) with a resolution to pre-book our accommodation in future. (Did we stick to it? Did we ****!)

This was our destination after Sacramento. After the completely blinding weather of Sacramento, San Francisco was positively chilly. On the bus, looking over the hills that surround the Bay Area, I could see the cloud and fog rolling in quite fast. You won't be able to see a nice photo of the Golden Gate Bridge on this site, cos I couldn't even see it, it was so cloudy!

We arrived in LA after Yosemite, and to me that was like going from the sublime to the ridiculous. I didn't really like LA, compared to other cities such as New York, and especially compared to places like Yosemite and the Grand Canyon. LA is too sprawling and there really isn't that much to do. Still, it was somewhere to go.
