Lamphun the former name is Hariphunchai, (หริภุญชัย) is another interesting Province (Changwat) rich with natural resources and historical sites. The town was found in the year 1663 and the first ruler was a Queen called Chamma Thewi. This charming province is also noted for its beautiful women and tasty longans.

 

ATTRA CTIONS WITHIN THE CITY

Wat Phrathat Hariphunchai 


  This monastery is approximately 150 meters from the township area, built in the reign of King Athittayarat and has been repaired, renewed, and enlarged from time to time. Phrathat Haripunchai Pagoda is currently 46 meters high having nine-tiered umbrella, made of gold weighing approximately 6,498.75 grams, placing on the top. The base is of square shape with 20 meters in length on each side. On every full moon day of day of the sixth lunar month, there is a celebration of this Wat Phrathat in term of the annual fair.

Nearby is located Hariphunchai National Museum which houses numerous Lanna antiques found in the region. The museum is opened to public everyday except Monday, Tuesday and religious holidays from 09.00-16.00 Admission fee is 10 baht Tel. 511186.

 

Ku Kut pagoda or Wat Chamma Thewi

       This monastery was built around A.D.755 by the Khmer artisans. The pagoda structure is of the square Buddha Gaya characteristic as seen in India. Three standing Buddha images, in the attitudes of blessing are enshrined on each level of the pagoda base of each side totalling 15 images for one side of five levels, grand totalling 60 Buddha images around the pagoda. Relics of Queen Chamma Thewi, the first ruler of Hariphunchai, are housed inside the pagoda. The pagoda top was originally covered with gold but later, was broken and disappeared thus being called by the inhabitants Ku Kut or Pagoda without top.

AMPHOE BAN HONG

      Karen phatthana Huai La Village Situated at Ban Huai La, Mu 3, Tambon Pa Phlu, the village is approximately 50 kms. From Lamphun township on Lamphun-Li Road. The village itself is 500 mertres from the main road. It is a wholly Karen village which strictly to its traditons. Interesting activities include a traditional way of weaving cloth by using the hips as a loom. The finished product has its own unique colors.

Pha Weang Cave (ถ้ำหลวง) lacated at Pa Ploo village which is far from Ban Hong district office about 15 kms. Plentiful of stalugmites and stalagtites in the cave.

 

HOW TO GET TO LAMPHUN

            With an area of 4,505.882 sq.kms.,Changwat Lamphun consists of 7 Amphoes and 1 Kinga mphoe namely

1.Amphoe Muang 2.Amphoe Pasang

3.Amphoe Banhong 4.Amphoe Maetha

5.Amphoe Li 6.Amphoe Tunghuachang

7.Amphoe Banthi 8.Kingamphoe Wiangnonglong

The town is about 670 Kilomerres from Bangkok by car.

BY BUS
